How can you use them in the wrong way? How are they supposed to be used? Sex is sex. Violence is violence.
They should be used to compliment the story, and not as the main plot point. Take Lord of the Rings. The violence in that film helps portray the stakes, and it makes Frodo and Sam's quest even more important. But with other films, it seems to be just about the violence, sex, or horribly unfunny jokes. Since I don't go see the films that look to me like violent films, I can't come up with many good examples. But I did try and look one of them up, and it looks like it's all about the violence and sex. Where is the story in that film? A guy comes out and starts killing people with a pick-axe. Right. Some story.
If more film makers thought their stories and characters out more, they would be making a lot more money. There was a passage in a book called "Characterization and Viewpoints" that explains this, but I'm too lazy to write the whole thing in this post.
