Seeing as I have no experience with blender, and I don't know what's good and what's not, I'd say that's pretty great!
The edges go a little funky at the beginning, but it's good! Nice work!
The test is done in so much isolation its sorta hard to judge the animation. I'm not sure what effect you were going for.
However I would suggest you start the ship outside of the camera's field of vision instead of having it "jump" in. You might also consider either starting the ship further back so that it grows larger as it moves closer to the camera. Or vise versa, start it large and move it further away so it grows smaller (what I used in my animation http://www.vimeo.com/4513099). You've also got some complicated "green screen" issues that some time on Google should be able to fix.
The key to animation is to keep at it. So, keep at it! Any start is a good start.

I'd recommend doing a longer, slightly more complex test. You don't have to create an epic story, but something more than just a passing ship. Do a passing ship with other ships in pursuit, a simple space battle, recreate a scene from a movie, or whatever you feel like doing. The more complex the test, the more problems you'll run into. So up the challenge to yourself, but don't go too hard that you just give up in frustration. Simple tutorials are great as well.
I think I learned a lot from doing tutorials and then attempting to recreate the Clone Wars trailer: http://blip.tv/file/850381/ That was well over a year ago and it is AWFUL compared to what I can do now. But making it taught me a lot.
The thing that I love about Blender and why I use it is because of the amazing online community. There are just so many tutorials and resources that really whatever you want to do with it has been covered somewhere on the net. The best way to improve is give yourself a challenge and then study until you get it done.

Sorry for the previous post but I followed the tutorial until the last step cause I couldn't figure it out
BUT I got this
Yes, I used that, but in the test I was doing (ninja signature) I didn't have any studs to test it on. Sooooooo...yeah. Why didn't the set smooth apply to the cockpit in yours as well? Plus, for the cockpit only, you should have made it have a transparency of about 0.2-0.5. Do that by setting the alpha to 0.2, or if you want (this adds to render time) use the raytransp to give it a more realistic look.
