Apologize

Youtube HD

A music video of OneRepublic's "Apologize".

Inspiration was drawn from both official and fan-made music videos.  Because of my lack musical instrument knowledge, concert videos and instrument cover videos were studied to replicate some of the instruments being played.

Director Commentary:
It took 48 days from conception to final product to make this.  Most of the days were logged on my Twitter.  It's a good motivator, by the way.

While coming up with a video to this song, I looked at other music videos made for Apologize, must notably Aaron Platt's turntable.  I also viewed Twilight series' Taylor Lautner's attempt and Tyko Ink's interpretation.  Due to the popularity of Aaron Platt's video, I felt it would unoriginal to repeat the turntable theme.

It took this cover to suggest perhaps a montage sequence of multiple characters all singing a line of this song.  But given the amount of sets needed to be built, I limited it to just three: the doomed couple, the lead singer, and the man on the phone (a la Aaron Platt's).

Re: Apologize

I'm not a huge fan of the wholly CG LEGO animation approach, but I admit the rendering and lighting in this video was a marked improvement from your previous work -- the shaders all looked pretty natural.  I liked the customized hair on some of the characters.  The DOF added depth without being too much.  I thought the concept was pretty effective and music-videoy, that is the cutting between the band and a strained romantic relationship.  A bit cliché perhaps but then the song lends itself to that kind of story, and obviously you were going for something like the band's other videos, with which I'm not familiar.  Very nice mouth animation, it didn't really look very LEGO to me but having teeth and a tongue is helpful for this sort of vocal work.

Well done mouthing. mini/smile I like the look of this but isn't that just the most awful music (in my opinion). So many videos for such. mini/confused

Re: Apologize

That was the best lego music video I've ever seen.
Beautiful.

Re: Apologize

The only that bothered me was the weird flickering on the objects. Was this a shadow problem or was the anti-alasing too low?

Re: Apologize

No, I enabled Indirect lighting which helped gave it more natural lighting but with the aforementioned flickering.  It might have to do with ambient occlusion which I didn't enable.

But I'm fine with it, makes the perfect CG world look imperfect.

Re: Apologize

That was pretty cool. Overall it looked great, but the low quality models in so many close-up shots bothered me. If you're willing to put in the work, I think it would pay off to build all the parts yourself. MLCAD's parts obviously weren't designed for something like this. I liked the unique approach to the mouth animation, and I think it worked very well here, though it might not look so good in a non-CGI film. Editing was also nice; some of the camera movements were really cool, my favorite being the one that starts at 2:19. On the whole, I think you could utilize the CGI medium a little better, for instance creating larger or at least more elaborate sets than those here. Still, great job.

It also looks hella cool.

Re: Apologize

I think it would have been better if it was brick built, personally.  I think that more could be done with the lighting and sets if it were.  I think it was a good music video, but it could have been better.

*Double take* Wait, what?  As in actual bricks that I don't have and in those color with those decals, hair and faces?

Btw, I broke several LEGO purity laws and the laws of physics for those instruments.  The cello, for instance, was flatten a bit so the cellist could actually reach around it.  The guitars cannot be physically built without glue and the cymbal stands would have been cut up bars.

If I had the modeling and sculpting skill, I'd have given the girl the ponytail hairpiece.

Btw Lech, I think it was you that made Repent, do you still have a link to that. I can't find it.

Meaning actual LEGO rather than CGI.

Nice job, Lech. I can tell a lot of work went into that. I enjoyed it a lot.  mini/smile

Re: Apologize

Gawd I want to marry this. Maybe it's just because I love the song, but this was fantastic.

Re: Apologize

Like Smeagol, I don't really like 100% CGI brickfilms. But this was great!

Don't be fooled, my avatar is a facade of conformity.

You can do anything, just have fun while doing it.

This comment makes me happy. It's like, "We don't really like what you're doing, but we have to admit that it was actually really good."   mini/smile Great job again, Lech.

Re: Apologize

I think it was okay, but I think it would be more enjoyable if it was real legos. use this as a role model if you attempt to do it in real legos. mini/smile
