Price range?
My dad uses one that is a canon, but I can't remember what it's called. (I'll post the name and price later)
It makes pictures look better than what you see.
The Canon A590 is a hundred $$$, and takes really good pictures.
I say G10 or G9, fantastic. Or a Canon EOS 1000D.
Those are expensive...I don't think his parents would be to thrilled if he asked for one of those.
My Dad has a Nikon D2X, and a D40. I have a D100 myself, and it's pretty good.
Why not get your folks to give you some money and then buy two cameras.
You can get a second hand canon A85 for about £30 ($50) , a New logitech Q9000 for about £60. Both can be used for animation. Your folks would be pleased that you are trying to use money carefully by buying second hand where possible.
He has a 9000.
Any of the Canon Powershot cameras are good and relatively inexpensive (they are small for easier storage/transport and better for taking places like vacations, etc.). A few of the Powershots also have manual focus and remote capture for animation.
Some of the Nikon Coolpix ones are okay as well, but the L11 that I had wasn't very good, so be careful with those. If you're looking at higher end SLR cameras I would suggest the Canon Digital Rebel or any of the Nikon D-series cameras. They can be sort of tricky to figure out though.
