Re: Critique My Frame!

Oh fair enough. Light flicker usually comes down to the the camera shutter speed being equal to or equivalent to what the lights output, whether it is 50Hz or 60Hz.

Banding in camera if I'm not mistaken is generally caused by high ISO but there are other factors at play as well.

I own the C920 and haven't experienced that issue myself. Again, rolling shutter is more necessary for video. As it has to do with scanning across the scene rapidly, either vertically or horizontally. The only way this could apply for photography is if you were scanning rapidly and trying to take a photo which is redundant in itself because its illogical, as in why would someone do that? mini/lol

You're right about it having no shutter speed. That would need to be fixed via exposure.

I'm currently using an ND filter and a polarizer to darken the scene enough to allow for the higher eposure

Just a tip, you don't need a polarizing filter for that, as polarizers are used to get rid of reflection, darken skies and supress glare. Not necessarily to darken the image. And the more filters you put infront of the sensor you will begin to lose some quality. I would highly recommend using a ND filter with another stop.

Otherwise good conversation. All very insightful.

I do wonder tho, if dragonframe has a shutter option for C920? As some of the older models of logitech's webcam series had software that was able to adjust shutter speed, which is fascinating.

Re: Critique My Frame!

Interesting, that would be nice indeed! I wonder what if any third party software can control it. On Linux there's guvcview which has most of the controls, but isn't integrated into dragonframe, so I have to run it separately and simultaneously to dragonframe, since DF doesn't have the focus control in it's interface on Linux. I don't know why they missed that one.
Also, my ND isn't dark enough, so until I get another one, the polarizer I had lying around seems to help.

I don't know enough to know if that's correct, but you really want to keep your ISO as low as possible anyway.

Re: Critique My Frame!

Just wondering what people thought of this idea, its not a frame from the movie, just a concept frame. I wanted a shot of the city at night thought I would try to go with a miniature instead of CG. I don't have any more LEGO pieces to work with, so please keep that in mind when offering suggestions.

Thanks everyone.

Re: Critique My Frame!

Looks pretty good, if you went with a slightly larger scale for the buildings, it would make the trees look a better scale in my opinion.

Re: Critique My Frame!

Looking at it now it does look a bit off, I think I will try your suggestion, thanks!

Re: Critique My Frame!

Double post:

So here is an updated look at the set. Instead of making larger buildings I just removed the windows, this makes it look more like a town than a city, which was my original intent. I am having lightning strike the town, and was wondering if this looked decent.

Re: Critique My Frame!

Nice lighting effects! I always love the look of small scale building to represent a scene of a large scale .

Re: Critique My Frame!

I'd say find real pictures of lightning and use those instead. That lightning doesn't look convincing at all...

One thing that might help is to add a bit of atmospheric glow too. It usually lights up the whole sky.

Thanks, those are some very good points. I will update my footage.

Decided to do something different with the lighting on this one, thoughts?

Re: Critique My Frame!

Looks well lit, but what is the intention behind the light? The thing about light is that it should be intentional. Where is the light coming from (in the world of the movie), why is the light at the angle it is? What's the intention behind it? If it's just high key lighting, that's fine I suppose (though I'd soften it up a bit because it's quite a hard spotlight), but if not, what's it for? Light sets the mood.

Re: Critique My Frame!

I thought it looked cool, I’ll come up with some in-story excuse later haha. (You’re very right though)
As far as soft lighting goes, I really would like to soften it up, but how? In this scene hard lighting would be appropriate in some ways, but I would really love some tips for making soft light. Thanks!

Any advice on this one? How can I make it look like it's being lit by the lamps without them being too overpowering? Also, any tips on how to reduce the grain?

Re: Critique My Frame!

Maybe give it a soft fill light or two, to simulate light coming from the direction of the lamps. Then the whole scene will be brighter, and you can turn down the gain to get the correct brightness you desire. Turning down the gain should also reduce grain.

Re: Critique My Frame!

yeah, i'd add an external lamp with a yellow filter to give the characters some more light, and maybe you would consider bouncing a white light off the ceiling to give the characters a hair light so they're separated from the background. But of course, not too strong because that'll look unrealistic.
