Topic: New Marvel Series (possibly) coming to Freeform

Variety Magazine reports that two of my all-time favorite superheroes, CLOAK & DAGGER, will have their own series on Freeform (formerly ABC Family channel, and it's been a while since it lived up to that name).

Here's a link to the story:

I wrote a script for a brickfilm pilot a few months ago myself.  If anyone enjoys the series and would like to animate their own Cloak & Dagger brickfilm, you can contact me on it.  The screenplay in on theis BiM thread:

I wonder if 1) Spiderman will be in it, 2) It very closely will follow the comic book series 3) If it will have its own storyline, but will resemble the essence comic books (the one I most expect) or 4) they will totally ruin it like Michael Bay did with the Transformers movies.  As long as it's not #4, I'll be happy.  Also, the comic book began to stray away from the vigilante aspect and the Jack Bauer type questions it raised, and into a lot of fantastic Dr. Strange occultism.  Now, if I want all that weird mystic stuff, I'll read Dr. Strange (and I do when that's my mood), but to me it didn't fit Cloak & Dagger because it has a gritty realism to it.

I also hope they keep the priest and the D.A. in the storyline, because they really were just as important characters as the heroes.  I feel Freeform may be tempted to keep the priest out of the story entirely because having a religious figure as a role model seems to be a TV taboo today.

I've got lots of other questions, many of them having to do with character development & paralleling the storyline of the comic, (and... will it make it to TV; being greenlit means nothing) but I guess I'll have to wait and see!

UPDATE: It turns out that this was such a sudden move for FREEFORM that the series doesn't even have a writer.  I WAN TO BE THAT WRITER!

I'm pretty excited by this move. Cloak and Dagger are great (and overlooked) characters, and would definitely be a great bonus to the world of the MCU. I'm not sure if logistically they could crossover with the new Spider-Man, but I hope they do, since the characters' publication histories have been so deeply intwined.

I've actually been trying to find a way of getting them into the Marvel Brickfilm Universe lately, so if you're a fan, stay tuned for that mini/lol (shameless plug).

You do know the priest tried to ____ Dagger and murder Cloak because he thought Cloak's umbrakinesis made him a demon? It's a pretty important part of their story, since it kind of epitomises the struggles they have living on the streets (in so many ways, I could honestly write an essay on it). However, if a religious role model is what you're looking for, I don't think he will fit the bill, not after that.

I don't know if you've been watching Agents of SHIELD but Mack and Yo-Yo's relationship with their faith is more measured and more interesting. I can't remember which episode it is where Mack first says he's religious but it was just after the Christmas gap in season 3 I believe.

Re: New Marvel Series (possibly) coming to Freeform

Of course, the priest wasn't perfect and had some flawed qualities.   It only makes him more human.  In his defense, If I ever met a floating spectre without a physical body, who feeds on the light of others and can appear and disappear at will, I also would probably mistake Cloak for a demon of some sort.  I think most people would.

As for what you're saying about Fr. Delagado and Dagger, I don't remember that happening.  if you tell me what issue(s) that is from, I'll go through my C&D stack and look it up.  It's as complete as my Marvel-era Transformers comics.  But being a holy person doesn't mean that you don't face temptation, and sometimes fail.

I actually sent my script to Freeform, As a brickfilm it's complete, but for TV it would be an opening segment.  Because I'm not an insider, I'm confident I won't be chosen, but what the heck.  It only took a minute to send it off.

I was reading through my Cloak & Dagger collection, and here was something I don't remember at all and I'm surprised I missed it.  In Limited Series #2, thre's a reference to the Typlenol scare of 1982, the year before the issue was released.  This issue has a man who sneaks poison into the medicine bottle right at the supermarket.

This is what actually led to the safety seals (not the child proof) on medicine, jelly, mayo, etc.

Re: New Marvel Series (possibly) coming to Freeform

You should approach Freeform for the writer role. Usually with TV series there would be different writers for most episodes, however usually the first episode writer or the main writer gets the task of writing the series bible, which kind of lays out what will come in the rest of the series without writing the whole thing. Its a lot to take on, but I think that you could do it.

It's Marvel I assume? Not Sony or Fox or whatever.

I do not brickfilm anymore, but you can see my live action stuff here.

Re: New Marvel Series (possibly) coming to Freeform

Oh, yes.  It's an official Marvel series that began in 1982, which IIRC, is the year Wolverine came around.

Okay. So they could be in MCU movies, technically. Cool. I've always liked cloak.

Re: New Marvel Series (possibly) coming to Freeform

The universe is expanding.  I loved them both.  And they were a pretty dark series that, if it comes to Freeform, will need a bit of comic relief once in a while to keep it from being too tense.  But nothing like Scoprion humor, or so many other shows with that type of zany-hip humor.  It seems to have become the dominant form, that and the art-house wannabe "comedy" series about people in their late 20s or early 30s with lives so boring you wonder why their stories are on tv.
