The Code

Written by
Michael Tourette

INT. HALLWAY TO THE DON'S OFFICE - NIGHT

In the hallway is the door to the office of DON SIGNORITTI.  The camera slowly, slightly zooms in.

ANTONY (o.s.)
Father, you wanted to see me.

DON SIGNORITTI (o.s.)
Antony, take a seat.

CUT TO
INT. THE DON'S OFFICE - NIGHT

DON SIGNORITTI is seated at his imposing DESK.  ANTONY takes a seat before the desk.  All the FURNITURE and ATTIRE indicates that it is the 1920s.  Don Signoritti piurs a GLASS OF WINE from a BOTTLE and hands it to Antony.

DON SIGNORITTI
Here.  Have a glass.

Antony takes the wine and sips.

ANTONY
What's the reason you called me,
father?

Don Signoriti reaches into his desk and pulls out an ENVELOPE.  From it he removes BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS, which he hands to him.

DON SIGNORITTI
I would like an explanation for
this.

Antony looks at the photographs.

POV ANTONY
The photographs depict Antony secretly meeting with uniformed federal agents.

DON SIGNORITTI
One of my informants took those,
confirming my suspicions.

ANTONY
(resigned.)  Yes, it's true.  So,
wht are you going to do?

DON SIGNORITTI
You know our code.  Have no deal-
ings with law enforcement.

ANTONI
They wiretapped me.  I had to
cooperate.

DON SIGNORITTI
You don't have to say anything to
anyone.  Now our operation is
compromised.  I'm sorry, but you
must pay the price.

ANTONI
But, I'm your son.  Surely you
can overlook this...

DON SIGNORITTI
I wish I could.  But our operation
is like one organism.  We are all
parts of one body that work in
unison.  If one part goes bad,
ieveryone is done in.

ANTONI
But there has got to be some way
to give me another chance.

DON SIGNORITTI
The fact that you are my son is
what makes this so hard.  If I
make exceptions, it will be seen
as weakness.  It will also bring
down everything I built.  I
can not play favorites.  You've
betrayed the family.  You may be
my son, but the consequences
musgt be applied equally.

Antoni begins to feel tired.

ANTONI
So, what are you going to do?
Put me on ice...

Antoni begins to lose his balance.  He accidentally knocks the wine glass onto the floor, where it shatters.

DON SIGNORITTI
I've already done it.  This is
is not easy.  But I love you,
and chose the most painless way.
I see that the drug in the wine
is already taking its effect.

ANTONI
You poisoned me?!

DON SIGNORITTI
For the good of the code, I
have no other choice.  But you
will not feel any pain.  It
will be like falling asleep.

Don Signoritti gets up and begins to walk towards the DOOR to the hallway.

ANTONI
You can't do this!  I'm your son!

Antoni gets out of his chair, but stumbles on the ground and does not have the strength to get up.  Don Signoritti opens the door and proceeds to walk out.

ANTONI
(Weakly.)  I'm your son.

Don Signoritti walks out the door and closes it behind him.  For a moment, he listens for any sound from inside his office.  There is none.  Then Don Signoritti hangs his head down into his hands and softly cries.

Re: The Screenplay Challenge

Cooked Cat, what do you think I should put the last challenge as on this list?

!!

Next topic: write a screenplay where every character is symbolic of a concept, sort of how the group of 5 characters in Inside Out were each an emotion.  Only you can't do emotions!

OK.

Re: The Screenplay Challenge

I waited until BRAWL to give a deadline... it's August 8th, which also happens to be Melissa's birthday on Holding Our Own.

Re: The Screenplay Challenge

The deadline is tomorrow 11:59 PM local time!  The topic is "all characters are symbols who represent something" (like the ensemble cast of Inside Out).

Re: The Screenplay Challenge

No one submitted an entry.  Maybe they are too hard.  But I try to make each one a challenge' after all, "Challenge" is in the title.  I have been thinking of another challenge topic: "Urban fantasy".  In urban fantasy, a story contains one single thing that happens in real life that is not possible.  In movies, three examples are "Big", "13 Going on 30", and "Liar Liar".  In all these movies, there is an element (a fortune machine, magic dust, and a cake, respectively) that can make a wish come true.

A wish is not the only possiblity of urban fantasy.  In the British animated childrens series, "Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings", whatever he draws can come to life.  Night at the Museum is similar.  (Notice how threre is usually an enchanted object involved that connects to the magic, as in rustic, high, or dark fantasy) in "Transformer" (a short story from the mid 1950s), characters from a model railroad are alive and plot to kill the boy who sadistically tortures the figurines.  There are endless possiblilities, but in Urban fantasy,  there is always one real-life rule that can be borken.

I'll come up with a deadline soon, but it will be under two weeks!

Re: The Screenplay Challenge

That sounds a little more interesting to me. I'll try to enter, assuming I can gather enough ideas.

Re: The Screenplay Challenge

I guess this contest is dead.  I believe I provided a really good topic that wasn't too hard.  It is sad, becaus eI loved reading everyone's creative ideas.  If you ever want to share scripts with me, send me a forum email.

Re: The Screenplay Challenge

The creator of this contest, One Douglas, reached out to me a while back.  He wanted to see this contest re-instituted around this time this year.  We wanted to come up with some prizes as incentives to enter the contest... nothing big, but just a token of appreciation.

The challenge is returning!

I have a prize for the next challenge.  The winner of this specific challenge will receive a prototype of the Holding Our Own card game.  This four-player game lets players engage in and win "arguments" in teams of two.  Only four prototypes were made and will ever be made, so it's kind of a Lego collector's item of dubious value.  We're accepting donated prized from others.

The topic for this screenwriting challenge is the same as the one that we had when we last left off: Urban Fantasy.  In urban fantasy, life is normal except for one rule that allows the impossible to happen.  Examples of urban fantasy in movies are "Big" starring Tom Hanks and "Liar Liar" starring Jim Carrey.  In each movies, everything else is in real life, except for a magical item (a fortune machine and birthday cake, respetively), that allows a wish to come true.  Keep in mind that the impossible element DOES NOT have to be a wish: it can be a talking animal, a drawing that comes to life, a woman who can fly, anything that can't happen in real life.  In urban fantasy, it's usually ONE THING ONLY or ONE RULE ONLY that breaks the laws of the universe.  Within these confines, you are free to write anything you wish!

As the winner of the last challenge, I'll be the judge of this challenge, and the winner will choose and judge the next one.  The official formatting rules still apply: Limit your script to six pages of text, not including your title page.  If writing in plain text, that's 300 lines.  speech is limited to 35 characters per line and narration 70.

Deadline is 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time on January 31st, 2016 AD.  Jan 31 is the ANNIVERSARY of the Screenwriting challenge: one year!

GOOD LUCK!

Oh, and One Douglas, if I'm out of line anywhere here, LMK.

Re: The Screenplay Challenge

Here is my entry.  It is more of a comedy unlike my previous entries which were dramas and adventures.  I hope you enjoy it.

Re: The Screenplay Challenge

Downaloded!  I'll read it tonight.  Everyone else, get out your pencils and start writing!
