Re: Café Corner

Yes. I keep getting on as well to see if people commented on my entry mini/lol

I do not brickfilm anymore, but you can see my live action stuff here.

Re: Café Corner

The manner in which film are BURIED during THAC is unfortunate.

It's something I've thought about with regard to the redesign but it seems unavoidable when so many new films are brought into existence, all at once.

I have a question, I want to order pieces for building a bunch of something for a new video, the problem is I don't think I can get them all on Pick a Brick and I'm not sure how to get them all on Brick Link. Do I have to order every piece from a different person? Also how do you think I should I find the pieces? I'm not sure what there all called. If it would help if I posted a picture of what I want to order pieces for I can post one two.

Thanks a ton guys

Yes.  What I do is find the part I want most, find a dealer I like, and then I see how many of the parts that I need can I get from that dealer.  Then I move on to the next part I didn't find and repeat the process.  I also take the time to see if that person has things in colors I'm always looking for.  I use this technique to make the number of dealers minimal.

The bricklink merchant will contact you, usually in 24 hours, with a PM on bricklink.  You almost always pay with PayPal, which only takes a few days to establish an account with if you have a bank account.

If anyone feel that their film was buried thanks to THAC, and still wants to see some comments.  Feel free to send me a PM and I'll try to watch it and comment on it.

(Maybe that will at least help a little)

I think it's something we all expect. You're right: there really is nothing you can do.

Last year I made a deliberate effort to review entries that hadn't recieved any comments (or only a few). I should probably do the same this year.

Re: Café Corner

I'm always a little disappointed if my work gets buried without anyone reviewing it. I always feel a lot better once someone has commented on it.

I made it a point to review every single film from THAC and BRAWL last year, and I'm still working on this year's playlist. It's a hard task, so it takes a while. I'm only on film 40 (I think? I'm not positive), so I've got a good way to go. I guess I need to do that today instead of watching cartoons all day. mini/tongue

Re: Café Corner

Not sure if I'll get to doing all 68 of them, but I did make it a point to review a lot more than I did last time. Personally, I dislike writing reviews, even for films I really like. It's hard for me to think of what to say without repeating what others already have.

From personal experience however, even just a few simple words about an aspect of a film someone liked or a bit of constructive criticism go a long way in showing that my films are appreciated. Thus, it's only fair I do the same to others every once in a while, even when it can sometimes be hard to know what to write. mini/wink

Re: Café Corner

If I can find something to say, I do generally comment on entries. I think I have commented on at least half of the entries so far.

Re: Café Corner

Life's kept me too occupied to look at more than a handful so far, but I'm planning to go through them all Sunday and leave feedback on some. It is sad that so many get buried, but I honestly can't think of a way to prevent it.

And Brickcrazy nailed it, even a small and simple comment can mean a lot. Not every review has to be an essay.

Re: Café Corner

I always feel like it's a bit over the line for me to review a brickfilm, since the one that I've made in the last 2 years that had any resemblance to a story in it was extremely terrible. So I'm like, "Okay I didn't really like that" or "I noticed this" but don't actually comment on the videos because my opinion shouldn't be valid. Anybody else here know what I mean?

I understand your point of view. I felt this way for some time, and the only reason I am comfortable with it now was because I placed in the top ten in BRAWL. I suppose I'd recommend improving as an animator and then you'll feel more comfortable around it, but I suppose that you may as well comment anyway as in the end of the day the creator chooses which advice he or she wants to take, and which he or she wants to ignore.

Re: Café Corner

If you have a critique to make that you feel is valid, or want to make a comment of encouragement to the filmmaker, your reputation as a filmmaker shouldn't really matter. Talking down to someone is a different matter. However, telling someone that you enjoyed their film or that there is an area they can improve in that wasn't mentioned by anyone else is fine. I can see where you're coming from, but when this comes to mind, I just think of the advice one of my art teachers gave his students for doing productive critique; when critiquing work, divorce yourself from your ego.

Re: Café Corner

You don't have to make films to evaluate them; if you did, professional film-criticism would be in dire straits. Around here, just saying what you did and didn't like in a polite way is generally helpful for the director. It's possible that they'll decide your criticism isn't valid, but it's just as possible that they'll think "I didn't see it like that but now that he mentions it, that scene is a little bit difficult to understand!"

If the only thing keeping you from commenting on films is the feeling that you aren't qualified, I'd definitely encourage you to go for it anyway. It's great to get another director's input, but most of the people watching your films won't be directors, so getting an average audience member's input is always good too.

Re: Café Corner

Filmmakers make films for non-filmmakers. So of course you have a valid opinion regardless of filmmaking reputation, everyone does.

FutureLearn has recently released animation courses going over stop motion, cel, and CG techniques.

And they're free!

If you want to take it you'll have to do it by the next 4 weeks, but if you do, you can watch them at your own pace.

That's neat, Indy. I signed up to see what it's about, and it's looking pretty cool. A lot of the stuff is for beginners of course, but I like re-learning that stuff. I also see that the site has lots of other courses, like one for writing fiction. I might try out some of this stuff.
