I've done one live action short before and learned from the experience. Any other tips people could give me?Like maintaining good cinematography?

Plan the shots out ahead of time. This doesn't have to be a perfect storyboard (sometimes hard with comedy, if there is a lot of improvisation to the performances) but it is helpful to have a list of what shots/angles you want for each beat in the script. It'll help you prepare so that you're getting the best-composed shots you can for each part of the scene and not shooting the entire scene from a zillion camera angles just so you can create something decent later in the editing room.

Don't shoot with an overly wide aperture...it's popular to do this with dslrs but looks cheap many times. Real movies are typically at an aperture of like f/4-f/6 most of the time.

Re: Café Corner

So, is there any info on when/if THAC is going to occur this year? I'm pretty excited to do something, and it'd be nice to be able to plan ahead and put it on my calendar so I can wrap other stuff happening around it.

Re: Café Corner

January 2nd-3rd.

We'll get an official announcement out soon, hopefully. Nate and I are a little overwhelmed with the documentary right now is all.

Re: Café Corner

I have some writing tips.  Do you want that, or just on animating?

I'm home for Christmas, but leave on the 1st.

I was really hoping to be able to participate in this year's THAC, but it looks like I'll be sitting this one out. mini/sad

Me too. This is the only time of year when going on a vacation will be a bad thing. mini/blankexpression

Re: Café Corner

That weekend is a party weekend for me.
I'll try and fail again nonetheless.

Re: Café Corner

Hmm, that's the weekend right before I head back to school. (I head back that Sunday night)
Not the best timing, but still more than doable.
Thanks for the heads-up.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure this'll be my fifth THAC.
CAN'T WAIT. mini/XD

Re: Café Corner

You head back to school on a Sunday night?

Re: Café Corner

Well, I'm going up then so that I can get to work early that Monday morning.
School doesn't start until later in the week, but I'd like to get some extra hours in at work before the craziness starts up again.

Re: Café Corner

For those wondering how we determine the date for THAC each year:

It's always a Saturday-Sunday since that's the time we have the best chance people will not be working or in school. It always takes place *after* Christmas as in early years, we got a lot of feedback that people wanted to be able to use LEGO and cameras and other gear they received for Christmas. It can't directly overlap Christmas day or New Year's Eve or New Year's Day since those are holidays where people may be unable to devote their full attention to making a lego movie alone in the basement. Beyond that, it takes place as soon after Christmas as possible, so that the maximum of students will still be on breaks.

Re: Café Corner

Also, if the moon is in its fifth phase and an albino peacock crows- not one, not two, but three times, the date is postponed one hour for each healthy tooth in the seeing-frog's mouth.

So says the book of THAC.

Re: Café Corner

I only finished my TCOTY Lives entry the day before the contest ended, so I'm sure THAC will be easy mini/wink

I do not brickfilm anymore, but you can see my live action stuff here.

Re: Café Corner

I'm not sure if I'll be able to do THAC. I would like to and it would be a good opportunity to try out my new c920 I'm getting for Christmas. It depends mainly what time it will start (GMT).

Re: Café Corner

Up until 12 noon Jan the 3rd?

Re: Café Corner

Don't be ridiculous, William. Do you honestly believe that anyone can make a decent, gentlemanly animation within 24 hours?

THAC theme: Must be a decently gentlemanly film.
Mod Elements: All character's must wear a suit and tie. Top Hats are recommended.
