Topic: The Ultimate LEGO City Project

I am currently working on building a large LEGO city, which will be based on the LEGO modular range. The city will consist of 20 modular sized buildings, some LEGO design and others custom design. There will also be a canal running down the centre of the city with three bridges over it, as well as a subway station in the foundations on one half.

I originally estimated about 200,000 pieces would be needed for this project, however since starting construction, I now realize there will be a lot more that that. The project itself currently uses a lot of time planning and designing smaller versions of what I will eventually build in order to minimize cost of parts needed, whilst still having a great design.

Unless I come across a large amount of money, or win lotto, I expect this project to take a few more years still. Whilst I do not ask or expect any donations, if you are that desperate in helping out with the project, please private message me with any donation offers. They are of course greatly appreciated, and I will work out a way to credit those who choose to donate, as well as give them an opportunity to experience the completed city for themselves.

I plan to use the completed city as a permanent set for future animations, which will possibly be a part of a series of videos and films based around the same characters and stories occurring within the city. Beyond this, the city being modular design may have the ability to travel to various conventions. There may also be the opportunity in the future to allow other animators to use the city in their projects, but I will see.

I will continue to post updates to this thread as there is anything worth updating on. If you see anything in the updates you would like to see more detail on, please let me know and I will make extra updates. Otherwise, enjoy this first update, and please leave any comments and feedback mini/smile

Update One

The first part of construction is well underway. I chose to start the foundation by building the subway station. This will give me a good indication for how to continue building the foundation after this.

The ground level entrance will be in a plaza/mall section of the city, with commercial buildings surrounding it. To one side, there will be a double grand emporium, which will have a custom interior worth seeing (teaser for a future update). There will be other commercial stores to the other side. The plaza area itself will take up the space of a modular building, and I consider this to be one of the 20 buildings in total. You can also see in the image the ramp which leads to the first floor of the subway station. This floor will have ticket booths, and anything else I feel my subway station needs such as possible snack bars, and waiting areas, or subway station staff offices.

This second level contains a platform serving two train lines. A major feature of the subway station is the cutaway wall, as seen here. This will allow the ability to see and even use the subway station even with the city on top. It also allows the are to be flooded with natural lighting.

Here you can see the two full height columns and the support beams running off of them. The columns were based off of the design of the water barrel seen in the recent Creative Expert Detective's Office set. Alone they were relatively weak, but as I built them up with the support beams, they were a lot stronger. The larger round plate at the base of the column acts as seating for the platform. The station, or at least the platform, will probably consist of a total of four of these columns, however the other two won't be full height as there won't be a gap between the levels where they will be.

Here you can see a slightly better view of the intended gap in the first floor. This gap will allow a modern aesthetic to the subway station. The gap will stretch from the built side to the exposed 1x2 plate between the tiles on the other side of the beam.

Re: The Ultimate LEGO City Project

This is quite impressive! mini/bigsmile  I am looking forward to seeing more updates.

Edit: It looks as though you have already thought about this, but if you are planning on animating on this, MAKE SURE that you can easily use whatever camera you are using at good angles. Personal experience...

Re: The Ultimate LEGO City Project

Great to see you again mate! Been a while.

This project sounds fantastic, and looks it too from the images you've posted so far. It's certainly quite an ambitious project but one that I'm sure will pay off in the end. One thing that's often missing from brickfilms is a sense of grand scale in physical sets (and no wonder, since they're expensive and complex builds) which will no doubt make you stand out even more as a brickfilmer. I have to say,, I'm a little envious, both of your drive and the sheer volume of bricks you own.

I'm extremely excited to see what you do with this mini/bigsmile best of luck, and I shall be eagerly watching this thread!

Re: The Ultimate LEGO City Project

Good to see you around these parts again, Kieren. I hope you can acquire all the pieces you need. Good luck!

Re: The Ultimate LEGO City Project

Thanks for the feedback guys. It is good to be back, and hopefully I'll be back to animation soon too. Just ordered some more grey brick from bricklink to get this part done. I'm probably going to work on the canal wall next, since I have an idea for that.

I don't own that many bricks yet. Maybe only about 50,000, so there's a lot still to get.

There will certainly be parts of the construction that will be able to get a camera in. I think it will probably be the outside parts and the subway station thanks to the cutaway. Since I want to build the modular buildings to scale, which is more important currently for me than being able to animate their interiors, I think they may have some problems getting a camera inside. It shouldn't be too hard to replicate parts of their interiors separately though. Like jampot said, it will be most effective for showing grand scale in the setting.

Even so far, from the pictures you've shown, I'm pretty envious. I don't have anywhere near enough bricks of the same colour or shape to try building that kinda' schtick. mini/lol

Re: The Ultimate LEGO City Project

You do know that 50,000 is a huge amount of bricks, right?
Anyway, that project is awesome!

Look around Eurobricks or even Hoth Bricks; 50,000 Lego elements is tiny to what some people can amass in a few years.
Anywho; this is looking nice! Glad to see your return! When this is complete, will it be displayed at any major international Lego events, like BrickFair? I know you mentioned the mobility of modulars in your post.

Re: The Ultimate LEGO City Project

Kieren, this looks freakin epic. I've tried building many lego cities in my lifetime but none of them have added up to what I'm seeing here. Keep this up, it looks absolutely amazing so far.

Hope this answers the question mini/smile

I do think it will definitely make it to the Australian conventions, such as Brickvention or Brick-A-Laide. Internationally really depends on the interest in the final product and if I can keep it mostly intact as it travels overseas in some way or another.

Re: The Ultimate LEGO City Project

The city looks very good. I like that monster creature in the background.
I am quite held back in my brickfilms because I have very few bricks.
Being in Australia, I cannot find LEGO stores near me, and no pick-a-brick places.
Where do you get you LEGO bricks? Bricklink?

Youtube

my dad doesn't want me to brickfilm on because it's his computer, but he's not home right now at the moment.

There aren't any Pick-a-Brick places in Australia, except for LEGO.com which is pay per piece. Usually I get my sets from large department stores, as I find the prices they show are set by LEGO in Australia, and then I save on shipping. For odds and ends, I will usually use Bricklink, as shipping tends to be cheaper that from LEGO.com. If I'm doing a large order ($200+), I'll probably use LEGO.com as I get free shipping then, and can earn VIP points too.

Other than that, I have been fortunate enough to have been to America twice, which I visited a few LEGO stores each time. I came home with about 5 Pick-a-Brick tubs each time, which took me hours to fill. Give it a couple of years and LEGO will start looking at opening stores in Australia anyway.

That monster creature in the background was a large Bionicle MOC that I made with a friend several years back, and I haven't taken it apart since mini/lol

Re: The Ultimate LEGO City Project

It has been a while, so I thought I would give you all two updates this time around.

Update one - 1

First, some work has been done to the train station since the last update. The first self serve ticket machines have gone in place at the base of the ramp. These are based off of the ticket machine in set #60050, just in a more suitable colour for the modern subway station.
http://i.imgur.com/vqmtvXv.jpg

At the top of the ramp, I have made the clock and time board more compact, as I believe it gives it a nicer finish.
http://i.imgur.com/UW4QBUk.jpg

Downstairs, I have done some work on the electrical cables. I'm not entirely happy with this design yet, so it will probably change. The wires arent working, just for appearance, although I plan to get my hands on a proper power functions train later.

http://i.imgur.com/QjYzh1a.jpg

Over tother side, I have put up some billboard advertising, as well as a security camera.

Update two

Now for a new part of the city. The canal wil be the largest part of the entire city, as it stretches the entire length, and quite a depth as well. As you can see by what I have already built, it will be sunken beneath street level, which is possible due to the large foundation my city will eventually be on. There is still some refining of the design, however I am farely happy with what it already looks like, even in this early stage. Some notable parts that can be seen in the pictures below include trasparent blue and clear pieces that will cover the base of the canal and give it depth. The canal wall is bursting with the character you would expect in a European canal city, with masonry bricks acting as a facade for the exposed foundation, which then sits behind large reinforced arches, keeping the foundation from caving in. I haven't yet got the height right, I just quickly built what I have done to a height equal to the train station entrance.

http://i.imgur.com/wpC0XTy.jpg

That's all for now. Keep your feedback coming.

I may not be posting an update anytime soon, as funds are tight at this point. I am finishing off a script for a Star Wars/mad-max inspired sci-fi film at the moment though, so stay tuned for that.

Re: The Ultimate LEGO City Project

Hey man, any progress on this build? It's such a cool project and I can't wait to see how it goes (sorry for being an annoying fan).

Re: The Ultimate LEGO City Project

Not really any significant progress, I guess other than that it is still standing so I will get back to it someday. I am saving up for a car and a new computer currently, so my funding for this project is spoken for for some months still. I'll be sure to update here as soon as there is an update.
