Re: Film Scoring thread

The song is decent. In my opinion, it could be made much better by adding a drum and maybe a bass guitar about 5 to 10 seconds into the song. I was continually waiting for something more, but it never happened. It just seemed a little bland with only the one instrument throughout the entire thing.
Sorry if I sound a bit negative, it was decently good, I just think it could be made better. (Speaking from my experience of never having written a song before) mini/smile

Actually, I just whipped this up the other day on a break from filming and writing.

Travel Beneath

While this is a bit darker than I wish to take the film, this could easily be sampled and mixed into other parts of the soundtrack, and, I'd really love to use this over the ending credits. mini/smile

Personally, I think the bass is a bit too buried (when it first kicks in), however, overall, the rest is mixed rather well in my opinion. It's certainly not as muddy as my earlier attempts at film scores. So, I must be improving something mini/tongue

Re: Film Scoring thread

Wow... The this is really good. You really have a mastery of cluster chords which makes me, admittedly, a bit jealous. I especially like the track "Forced Change." It's so powerful, particularly where you apply that moving string rhythm. YAZ! Well done!

I composed all the music myself for my D&L entry. This is the music that happens during the Neveron Bulb commercial: https://soundcloud.com/tenny1027/epic-trailer-song

How about some spy music! mini/smile Perhaps for an Alpha Team movie?

Feedback is appreciated.

Personally, I think the "stereo image" is a bit too wide on the strings and brass, but, it's overall not a bad piece - even if it is verging on having a 1970's sound.]

@rafael9522

Nice instrumentation. I love the sound you chose. What kind of instruments were you using?

Re: Film Scoring thread

I don't know actually what instruments they are because I use a movie score maker and it has small premade melodies that I mix together. But I am pretty sure it was all done on a glockenspiel:

Re: Film Scoring thread

@Dyland Very funky! It definitely feels very spy like. The lead guitar was solid and rather memorable. Also thought the bass part worked pretty well. Although I'm not exactly what but there was something I didn't quite like about the drum part. BTW I listened to some of your other music and in particular really liked the piece "Adventurers".

@rafael9522 Loving the sound choice especially with the slight reverbiness. I liked how the main melody felt isolating kind of like something out of Spore. I would check the second glock melody that comes in though it feels a touch dissonant/clashy when it starts to sound a bit more majory. Although this may have been your intention of course!

I'm glad you liked my Alpha Team theme test. I recorded the song at a faster speed (and in a slightly higher pitch) and then recorded the lead guitar part slower (and at a lower pitch) - eventually putting the two tracks together in editing.

It's a technique that the Beatles used (recording different parts at different speeds) for songs like Strawberry Fields Forever, Rain, and even I'm only Sleeping. - All great songs, I might add.

However, the cymbals did seem to suffer a bit of quality loss and loudness increase during this change... I may try readjusting them - or even re-recording them last to guarantee that they 'sit' in their natural tone in the final mix.

For the guitar; I edited it heavily. I went ahead and gave it lots of echo/reverb/delay - and even added a flanger effect to it to give it more of a 'watery' sound - similar to the lead in the Beatles song Octopus's Garden!

I have a great passion for working on reviving the LEGO Adventurers sets into a brickfilm. It's something I've done, on and off, for about five years now, and, I hope to never stop. - Eventually I'd like to make several films based around the classic LEGO theme, and perhaps even an entire series! mini/smile

However, I've personally never really enjoyed any of the themes I've done for it. Sure, "Adventurers" was pretty good, but, I just feel like something else could be improved upon - musically.

Any suggestions?

Re: Film Scoring thread

With Adventurers in particular the musical ideas/motifs themselves are quite decent. I would of liked to have been able to hear the string ostinato at the start of the piece more clearly as the main theme came in. Also perhaps the timpani part could do with being slightly less active so that when it does occur it causes more emphasis.

Re: Film Scoring thread

@Dyland
I did this short remix of your Adventurers Theme. Looking at it from a purely musical standpoint,  there are only a few things which I think could have been done better. You may want to apply them to a remix of your own. First, it's fast... like WAY fast. Fast is fine, but the way the melody turns in the middle of every phrase, well...trumpets aren't meant to do that.

Secondly, I agree with BAR, the timpani part (while enthusiastic), is a bit much. It's a decoration. Timpani is like icing, too much can ruin a perfectly good cake; not that your cake is ruined, I don't even know if you bake, and besides that all depends on the flavor, and what if... [blathers on].

Anyway, the final thing would be that your underlying chord never changes. I don't know what the restrictions of your program are, but I would hope that it would allow changes to chord structures. Looking at other soundtracks, it is very rare that you find one that holds onto one chord the whole time (An exception would be "Panoramic" from The Book of Eli).

So here is my remix. I tried to apply the things I mentioned, along with slight changes in instrumentation. My program messed up before I was finished, so I couldn't add a deep bass drum line or a brass harmony. Oh well.

And it is awesome! A little slow for my tastes, but, after listening to my original after yours, I can certainly say that it is too fast - way too fast. I'll be sure to do things a bit slower in the future, since, my music usually doesn't loose quality when making it faster in the mixing. However, slowing it down does. So, I'll keep it as slow as I can when I record, as to allow me more tempo options for the final mix.

If I Were A Minifig wrote:

I agree.

In the original RAW takes, the trumpet kinda fell into the background too much. It needed to come out, otherwise, it was just buried. However, now that I've been mixing seriously for a bit longer, I can see that the levels aren't quite right. The trumpets are too loud. If I re-record that piece, I will quiet them down a bit, and perhaps "wall of sound" them with some flutes or strings if the main melody needs more oomph.

If I Were A Minifig wrote:

I currently don't use a music-program other than Audacity to mix. I used to mess around with MAGIX music studio 12 (or something or other like that), but, it was just a bit too limited.

Currently I just record things on my high-end Casio electronic keyboard using my Blue Yeti microphone. I do have a MIDI to USB cable for the keyboard, however, don't have a program with good samples/instruments that I like... Also, the keyboard comes with samples of it's own, and I kind of want a program that'll be able to utilize those as well. Most that I've seen so far don't mention piano-sample compatibility.

I do plan on looking into some music programs this fall/winter. So, any suggestions there would help me as well.

Very, very soothing. The underlying tone behind the piano (perhaps low piano? organ? bass? - it has kind of a wah-wah effect, in my opinion) is a bit loud. It pops out a bit too much in the mix, though, that could just be a matter of taste...

Otherwise, I really like it! Perfect for an incidental "staring at the rain out the window" kind of scene. mini/tongue
