Re: BiM Summer Contest: Darkness & Light Production Topic

Hey, lots of frames!

Headpods, I like the composition on the last frame, and the light coming through the window is a nice touch.
The others aren't as well balanced, and I feel that the faces are a bit too shadowed, drawing emphasis away from what should be the focus of the shots.

Aquamorph, Amazing! I love the lighting and angle, but the aspect ratio seems unnecessarily narrow. Any particular reason you went with that?

William, while it's passable, you may want to clean up the chroma effect some more. The purple sky is a cool and dramatic choice, but I feel the set is otherwise a bit basic and plain.

Willow Tree, fantastic lighting! And the stuff strewn on the floor gives it a nice real-world feel.

Been awful busy this last week, but I'm about half-way through sound editing, and recently got the first section of the soundtrack in. (Sounds sweet!)

Here's the title screen, any thoughts on the logo?

Thanks for your feedback on my pics. Very helpful! I like how you put in a Bible verse in your title screen. Well done. I think many other animators will use John 3: 19-21 as a reference for this years theme. For some reason, I think the Logo seems a bit bland. But you don't have to change anything. Your choice. mini/smile Cant wait to see all the entries! This is going to be exciting!

Re: BiM Summer Contest: Darkness & Light Production Topic

Thanks, I tried one that was slightly different, but it just didn't feel right.
Sometimes less is more, but do you have suggestions on how to spruce it up?

Oh, and the verse reference is in my sig image, not the title screen. Though it will be somewhere in the credits/titles.

Re: BiM Summer Contest: Darkness & Light Production Topic

I really like the title screen Pritchard. I've always been a fan of minimalist graphic design.

Re: BiM Summer Contest: Darkness & Light Production Topic

Amazing shots! I think from this contest will come out a very good stuff, especially in the area of cinematography. My intention was also to make an entry but preparations have taken me longer than I thought. A couple of days ago I started the production but it'll take me a long time, I don't think I get to the deadline even remotely. Anyway I will continue with the video. Good luck to all in this month!

Re: BiM Summer Contest: Darkness & Light Production Topic

Yeh. The set might look a bit basic with mine, but I didn't want anything too fancy, because it's supposed to be up a mountain. It's a working project, I'm only a quarter of the way through finishing the greenscreen, there's a lot of work to be done. That frame is probably not the best example of my film, but hopefully, the end result will be okay.

Thanks. The aspect ratio is 2.40:1 which is a wide screen film format. I like the look over 16x9. It just works better with the way I frame my shots.

Re: BiM Summer Contest: Darkness & Light Production Topic

@WillowTree, wow, I like that frame. The lighting is really nice. Can't wait to see it in action.

@Pritchard, Fantastic, I think that logo is perfect. No need for it to be overly complicated.

As for an update on my film, I'm in sound design. I've edited it all together, got most of my soundtrack, and done color correction. Unfortunately, sound effects are quite hard to do for my film, and I'm not finding many good ones online either. I'll work something out, though. I hope to be done completely within the next couple of days (aside from small things that my test audience may point out).

As for a frame,

This is an establishing shot.

Thanks. I'm glad you were able to pick up on the floor details. I was initially worried that the lighting was too dark.

As others have pointed out, the title card looks great, Pritchard. Simple but very effective.

Thanks, rio. I hope the scene turns out alright.

That's a great establishing shot. How did you pull that off? Chromakeying?

Re: BiM Summer Contest: Darkness & Light Production Topic

I'm really liking what I'm seeing so far with all the entries to this contest. Can't wait to see the finished films!

@Pritchard, I too am a really big fan of that logo. Simple perfection.

@rioforce, I really like what you did there with that shot. Your films have a rather unique feel to them, and that frame captures it perfectly.

My god rio, that is one of the most beautiful frames I've ever seen in a brickfilm

Thanks, Chroma key wasn't used, just good ol' masking (manually erasing the background) and some composting.

@Headpods, that's a nice frame, I like how the lights beam in behind them, very creative.

@rioforce Your frame looks amazing. Tell me how you do masking. I've been using chroma for my background, as you can see on the previous page, it:s very difficult and a long process mini/smile what do you think of mine?

Re: BiM Summer Contest: Darkness & Light Production Topic

I have no idea how Rio does it, but this is a pretty good tutorial. It's how I learned.

Re: BiM Summer Contest: Darkness & Light Production Topic

Oh yeh, I use that with nearly all my films. My stop motion software calls it rig-removal.

Re: BiM Summer Contest: Darkness & Light Production Topic

I don't think I'll be able to finish my entry. I have only animated 3 shots, which is no where near a quarter complete. I then still need to work on all the music, audio and cgi. I'll try my best to work on it but if it does not make it, I'll still complete it and upload it as soon as it's done.

Re: BiM Summer Contest: Darkness & Light Production Topic

It's nearing the middle of August and I'm not even close to being half way done with animation. I wish I had gotten an idea closer to the beginning of June, but because I didn't I am now very far behind. I still have a ton of complicated scenes to film, a crapton of CGI work to do, as well as a character who doesn't have a voice actor yet.

Let's do this.

Re: BiM Summer Contest: Darkness & Light Production Topic

@Pritchard - I love the simple design of title. It keeps the focus on darkness and light.

How in the world did you use composting in a film? Bad jokes aside, I love the lighting and the atmospheric glow.

As for my own progress, I have finally begun, and have finished ~1/4 of the film. I must say that it is the most tedious film I have worked on, largely thanks to having a shot in which the set moves 1/2 mm per frame for a super smooth camera movement. It also doesn't help that I have to duck beneath my desk before I take each picture, in order to eliminate light flicker...Oh! the joys of brickfilming...

Re: BiM Summer Contest: Darkness & Light Production Topic

Thanks guys! Glad you all like that logo.

For the first time outside of THACs, I've been trying to track how many hours this film has taken to create.
It's a very rough figure, but so far as I can calculate, I just passed the 100 hours mark today. Honestly, it's a big number, but still that doesn't sound like that much. A mere 1.5 hours a day since the day I created the script file.
(Ok, scratch that, when you put it like that, it is a big number!)

So, the lesson for today is....That I obviously need a life. mini/tongue

Lovely shot Rio, love the mini-model, as well as the lighting.
