Re: Summer Contest: Darkness & Light

Glad to see a positive response! We put quite a bit of work into organizing this, so I'm hoping the response will continue to be good.

One thing I find funny, is the fact that the theme is very similar to the one from this years "Steinerei": "Light and Shadow"  http://brickboard.de/viewtopic.php?f=18 … &view=

When we were filming the Bricks in Motion Documentary in February and visited GoLeGo, he mentioned the theme to me. We had already chosen the contest theme for this competition, though, so it was a coincidence!

Don't miss out on the giveaway, folks!

Re: Summer Contest: Darkness & Light

I have been looking forward to this contest for many weeks and when I saw the contest announcement this morning, I was completely blown away. My already high expectations have been exceeded. I'm looking forward to see what people come up with!

I just have one question, are we allowed to use the contest cover art in our entry? In the credits of our film, for example?

Yes, I've added this question to the Q&A and included a link to a high-res version of the logo.

Re: Summer Contest: Darkness & Light

I love that the prize pool does not force winners to choose between LEGO or film making supplies and it's wonderful to see one include light gels and black-wrap, two things which are very important to my own films.

Re: Summer Contest: Darkness & Light

Philip and I worked hard to make sure the prize pool would appeal to a wide range of interests, and went beyond just rewarding brickfilmers with more LEGO. I'm super excited to see what films people come up with for this contest!

Re: Summer Contest: Darkness & Light

That's not the most original theme ever (I can't remember how many photography/short-film contests with that theme I have seen), but I understand what you're trying to do with it. And I totally agree with that.
Brickfilmers don't work on the lighting enough.

I might try to enter.

(And good prizes, that's cool !)

Re: Summer Contest: Darkness & Light

I have a concept that fits the theme all in my head. I have to transcribe it to paper, and come up with a story. Missed entering TOY, so I definitely won't miss out on this.

Re: Summer Contest: Darkness & Light

We can have it in what ever Genre we want though?

Yes, we wanted something accessible after the tepid responses to Kitchen Sink and Avant-Garde, and we liked this theme because it will (hopefully) encourage people to focus on some aspects of filmmaking that are often neglected in brickfilms.

Your film can fall into any story genre you like, as its story ultimately fits the criteria laid out in the theme section. The examples are just examples; there's no need to stick to film noir, science fiction, or any other particular genre.

Re: Summer Contest: Darkness & Light

so, it could be any action, suspense, sci-fi, anything, provided it's theme is Darkness and Light.... just wanna make sure that's clear before I start working on my story

Re: Summer Contest: Darkness & Light

Yes. It can be any setting or genre as long as the general theme matches "Darkness and Light."

Re: Summer Contest: Darkness & Light

It'll be interesting to see what comes out of this contest. I'm not really in a position to do a stop-motion film right now, but I may still write a script for this.

Re: Summer Contest: Darkness & Light

I love the theme. I would love to enter this contest, but my LEGO and I are currently in a long distance relationship, and only a small portion of my collection lives with me; so unless I happen to come up with an appropriate story idea that doesn't involve LEGO sets, there's no way I can enter. I'm super exited to see the films that come out of this theme, though.

Re: Summer Contest: Darkness & Light

Sounds awesome. I'm having lots of ideas, and I think I might try and get some of my uni friends into this as well to help. We are all studying film anyway.

We are allowed to use as much help on whatever we want right? Or does it have to be just our own film?

Re: Summer Contest: Darkness & Light

Now I have a chance to get back into stop-motion again. When I first read this, I automatically got a great idea. I just need to incorporate a story into it.  mini/bigsmile

Yes! Collaboration is encouraged. However, we won't be able to divide up the prizes evenly for you, so you'll have to determine who receives the prizes in the case of a win. Entries may be submitted on the basis of one entry per director, so you can help with someone else's entry and still enter a film you've directed.

Re: Summer Contest: Darkness & Light

So... Am I allowed to use a piece of Bach in the soundtrack, as it is creative commons?
On the other hand, does basing off an Asimov short story's main concepts mean I'm breaking that same contest rule?

You can use CC-licensed recordings as long as you credit them however the CC license requires. By the way, classical music is not necessarily free of copyright issues -- the compositions are in the public domain, but the recordings are often copyrighted.

If it's a direct adaptation of an Asimov story that would violate copyright, yes. Obliquely borrowing inspiration from somebody else's story, but not basing your story on it directly, would usually be okay.

Is this a 'yes' to the idea of taking a concept discovered in said asimov story?
I don't want to say out loud here what is exactly that I am thinking of. I mean of taking a fact that makes the story go and is present in an asimov story. Sorry for being confusing.
