I liked the tone and the voice-acting in this film a lot. It was somber and really carried the film. Unfortunately, I think the reveal was a bit abrupt, and it took me a second to realize what had happened. I understand that the time constraints of THAC probably didn't help, but the rushed ending didn't mesh well with the slower, brooding pace of the rest of the film.
I applaud you for focusing on a more serious subject, and for interpreting "A Fresh Start" with a more negative focus.
