Topic: Snow on the ground - best soloution?

I know this has been asked before, because I used the search before I came here to make the new topic, but my question was not answered, because all of the topics either were dealing with falling snow CGI, or nobody had ever animated ground snow before, so they were just guessing. However, I did learn a bit from my search, so it was not in vain, but anyway, let's get to the point:

I want to animate snow on the ground, and don't own enough white LEGO bricks, so what is the most practical way to make fallen snow in an animation? Sugar? Flower? Baking Soda? Salt? Some mysterious element that has not been put on the periodical table of the elements yet?

If anyone has ever animated with any of these substances, I'd like to know your opinion on it. Is sugar sticky? Does baking soda leave a fine white powder on everything and accumulate in cracks and crevices?  Is the mysterious element radioactive? mini/tongue

I'm planning on doing this for my Christmas film, which I am going to work on this month, so there's not too much of a rush, but don't wait until January to answer, cause it'll be another year by then ok? mini/wink

Thanks!

Powdery stuff might work, but it's rather risky for animation, messy, and hard.

Though I did discover at one point by accident that if you have very soft lighting and a very bright image a light grey landscape can be made to look somewhat like snow:

Of course, unlike this it would be best to remove any white bricks so that the grey wouldn't look dull in comparison.
Light grey is about someplace less than 25% away from white, so it's not that far off.  The image could be brightened as much as it needs to be to make the grey feel brighter.  My brother mistook this image for a white landscape the first time he saw it and wondered how I'd done it since he thought I didn't have enough white bricks for it.

Alternatively, you might animate upon a white blanket, just avoid showing the character's feet so you could keep them down properly.

Re: Snow on the ground - best soloution?

Flour works great. And if you animate it from the side you can just make a drift in front of the camera and animate the guy on studs [I did this in Over Coming The Monster Of Life and it worked really good]. Just be careful though because if it gets wet its really sticky and doesn't come of easily at all.

Baby/body powder?  Washes off with water.

Edit: Smells good too.  mini/lol

Re: Snow on the ground - best soloution?

Thanks for the tips, guys. I like Squid's idea, but the minifigures are going to be walking in the snow, so the gray bricks will look dull beside them, so I'm afraid that won't work. mini/sad By the way, may I ask how you got the soft lighting? Did you point your lamps at the ceiling and turn on a longer shutter, or was it something else?

I checked out your video, osomstudios, and that was a very nice technique, but like I said, the script requires that they walk in the snow, so I'm going to have to see their feed.

Baby powder is a new and interesting idea, but I think I'll stick with Baking Soda.

I did a quick test of baking soda snow, you can check it out below. I used a long strip of sticky-tac and put it on the ground, then poured baking soda over it, and brushed it smooth with a paint brush. As you can see in the test, the snow looks fairly convincing, and the sticky tac gives a good surface for the minifigure to walk on without falling over. Sorry about the terrible animation in the test, I wasn't going for smoothness when animating this, I was just testing a concept. I also had to edit the brightness and contrast in post so you could actually see the snow, because I had my exposure too high, so that's why the video is so dark. mini/confused

Re: Snow on the ground - best soloution?

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to throw this out there too. I animated a snowboard on the baking-soda-tacky floor, and it worked pretty well. Please overlook the terrible third shot with the snowboard jump. I wasn't even trying to do it well...

Again, the exposure was too high (it's really hard to get exposure with snow right), but this time I didn't darken it any.

Now to go wash out my tacky so it will become sticky again...

Re: Snow on the ground - best soloution?

What about cotton wool, I've used them as explosions and smoke.
I remember that robot chicken uses white fabrics to make snowmen.

It would be hard for minifigs to walk on cotton so you'll have to put the cotton and camera on a certain angle to make an illusion. If you want the minifig's feet to be seen, then using cotton isn't a great option.

I just thought I'd keep you guys posted on how the snow is coming. I bought two boxes of baking soda for a dollar, and let me tell you, there's a lot in those boxes! A very good investment. Easy cleanup (Just scoop up the large ammounts and put them in a bucket for re-use, then wipe the desk with a wet cloth and the baking soda will evaporate), and goes a long way. It's pretty easy to animate on too. I tried another test today, but I won't show it, because it contains film spoilers. mini/wink

That looks great.  I hope to see foot prints in the snow.  That would be a cool look.  mini/smile
