Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Aha, I watched Noah the other night.  Really don't know what to make of it.  Very bleak and very uncomfortable to watch.
IDK, maybe I need to watch it again...

Also watched Super (2011)
This was another uncomfortable watch.  I like James Gunn's directing approach, but something just didn't feel right with the film.  There were some pretty horrific scenes, but also some really funny scenes too.  I'm a fan of Rainn Wilson, and I definitely think the casting was right, but it just didn't have the charm of another similar film.  I get the angle that they were going for, but did it work?  I don't know.  Another one I need to watch again perhaps.
Can't really think of a rating, so I'll just give a confused face mini/what

The Wind Rises (2013)

Without a doubt, one of Studio Ghibli's finest. Magnificent, uplifting, breathtaking and without a doubt one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. It swept me up off my feet, showed me some of the most beautiful things in the world, and set me down gently at the other end. This is a film that will stay with me forever.

It's perfect. 5/5

I still have yet to see Noah. Did you think it was bad in terms of Biblical accuracy, or just that it was a badly made film?

Jaem, Noah was really bad on both points.  The film itself had excellent special effects, but as a story it was on par with a Sci-Fi original movie, which I abhor.  On the sci-fi original movies, it saddens me that there are so many quality writers who work hard to get into television, and never do, and stuff like Mega Snake actually gets on television.  The first 22 minutes of Noah was a high budget B-movie where they didn't care about story or character.

The woeful inaccuracy is a totally other story.  We did fast forward to see the rock people we were hearing about before switching to some old three stooges.  That WAS our best laugh.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I've only seen the first half of Noah so far, and I think that half is excellent, religious controversy included. It's a wonderful character study, has breathtaking visuals, and actually gives life to the Old Testament which (apart from having been made redundant by the New Testament) has always been a difficult text for most people to digest, both as a piece of literature and its spiritual messages.

Though I'm not now, I was brought up a Catholic, and find next to nothing in Noah that is offensive to Christianity. If anything, I believe it's a great way of engaging a modern audience in a world where people find it hard to connect to Christianity.

Again, I'm no longer a Catholic, and I have no interest in 'converting' people to any religion, but I also believe that all religions have great cultural and spiritual value, so please don't think I'm just dismissing the Bible as 'dead' when I talk about how good I think Noah is. I hope that's okay; I don't want to accidentally offend any of you guys mini/smile  I think sometimes my views can be a bit esoteric, and I don't always know when to keep them to myself.

Kingdom of Heaven
Breathtaking. Beautifully shot, very engaging, and though most of the film is quite severe in tone (which can feel heavy at times) it has its own bizarre, tongue-in-cheek sense of humour. Also, the Crusades don't get enough attention; it's a fascinating period of history that Scott brings to the screen in a fresh and wholly welcome way.

Not Ridley Scott's best work, but still awesomesauce. And if you've played Assassin's Creed, you'll see some aesthetic similarities.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Jampot, though I don't recommend Noah to anyone, I don't think you are being offensive just for stating yr opinion on the movie!  Our views are our own, and who is anyone to tell others how to think?  I think that as a community, we should be able to express our opinions, as long as we're not insulting others, and all be able to discuss things together respecting each others' views.  (I'm not here to convert anyone either.)  I don't think the movie is offensive to Christianity in particular myself, but one of hte guys I was with who got through the whole movie eventiually said that Noah sucks the essence of the story from it.  The Genesis story, whether you believe it happened, believe it as an allegory, or think it's just a story, is about redemption, a theme throughout the Torah.  In the movie, according to my friend at least, because I couldn't stomach the whole thing, mankind was condemned.  God even tells Noah to kill his son so that the human race can be eliminated from nature, and Noah couldn't bring himself to do it.  It turned the redemptive story of Noah, into a cheap environmental promo.  But in the above post, I wanted to focus on the poor quality of the writing and much of the acting rather than this, and not touch on the religious content.

That much said, I will stand with you 100%, Jampot, and stand up for you, because you should be free to come here and tell people that you liked or disliked ANY movie!

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Any movie that tries to visualize the Bible will be controversial. And, more often than not, a cheesefest.

I watched Richard Linklater's Boyhood recently. Best film I've seen this year. An understated masterpiece and a memorable experience; watching a kid grow up right before your eyes. It's one thing to revisit characters every 9 years (Linklater's Before Sunrise trilogy), but to witness characters literally age over the course of a single movie? Surreal. Felt so intimate, I was in tears by the end. I think everyone can relate to the film--they can certainly reflect on it, anyway. Even if you don't live in Texas.

I read an article about that film in Time magazine. From what I can gather, it looks extremely excellent. I hope to watch it in the near future.

Guardians of the Galaxy
I was very optimistic going into the theater ready to watch this film.  The beginning of the film made me think this was going to be very very depressing, but suddenly the film took a really nice turn.  I'm not a huge fan of the Marvel films but even though I had never read the comics the film made sense to me.  I did kinda get an "Avengers" feeling while watching this movie but the characters varied so much that it didn't matter as much as it could of.  One of the only other problems that I had with the film

Spoiler (click to read)

was how incredibly OP the villain seemed.  And then to get defeated so easily and then to remember that they didn't take down the greater threat in the universe gave me a twitch.

Overall this was a very decent film, probably film of the summer.  Great humor and great characters.

Question. Where did you see it? I had plans to go with a friend when this movie was coming out in the US. Then the bumped the American release date down a week. And when that day finally came, I went to Cinemark to look for the times and the showings. But, even though every film site claimed that its "wide release" was March 28th, no cinema near me was showing the film. That was the exact same thing that Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom had done at Christmastime.

Is The Wind Rises out on DVD now?

Have you seen a big-chinned boy?

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Thanks HOO for the information, and Jampot, for the additional viewpoint. The only clip of Noah I've seen is the Creation sequence, which I thought was beautifully done, even if I don't generally agree with that viewpoint of creation.

There's also a serie of documentaries called the Up series which returns to the same subjects every 7 years. I haven't seen any of those yet, but I think it could be very interesting.

Wall-E
Being older now than I was when I first watched Wall-E has allowed me to appreciate it's artistic nature.  The only major gripe I have with it is that after the first act it lost a little of it's charm, but not near all of it.

Wow. I really can't say anything with spoilers, but it's one of my fave Marvel movies so far. Amazing.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I'm probably gonna go see Guardians of the Galaxy on Saturday. But, last night, me and my brothers watched a Harry Potter double feature: Parts One and Two of The Deathly Hallows, back to back. It took a few hours, but we finally finished this awesome film franchise.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One (2010)

Some hold it high for introducing the epic finale to an epic saga. Others critisise it for doing just that. I've heard that you're allowed to skip this one, because it's Part Two that finally gets the job done.

But, this one has some excitement to offer as well. So, I would definitely start with this one, and not skip it.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two (2011)

This is a finale that every Potterhead should want. I'm no Potterhead, because I've never read the books. But, this is a wonderful way to end it all.

Although, I'm sorry. Am I supposed to feel sympathy for Snape who's had so much hate residing inside of him for everyone and everything? And his sappy "I've always had a thing for your mom" backstory isn't going to change diddly. Snape's a jerk who deserved what came to him after he joined He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named's side.

Other than that, I loved this one, and I really think they should focus on Albus Potter's life at Hogwarts. That would be an exciting storyline to follow. Who knows, maybe there will be some new problems in the Wizarding World. Maybe Draco's kid will start a House Rebellion and turn against the school, or something.

9.5/10

I gave this one the same rating due to the fact that both parts are pretty much the exact same movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy
I can't say much about this film without just adding to the mountains of praise this film has rightfully garnered so far. In short, it's hilarious, looks wonderful, has a great soundtrack, some brilliant lines, and is possibly my favourite Marvel film yet. 9.75/10

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Saw Guardians as well. The second best Marvel movie this year next to Xmen Days Of Future Past.

I was kind of put off towards the end.  I don't know, I just didn't really like the way they portrayed it all, but then again it's been a while since I saw it last.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I didn't see it, but my brother saw Guardins of the Galaxy thrice and loved it more than just about any other Marvel movie.  My other brother liked it too, but that's to be expected.  It seems that this movie is universally liked.  I haven't seen it yet but will when it gets to DVD.  My brother's not always on track when he obsesses praise on a movie, though.  He really missed the boat with "Titanic" (pun intended).
