Topic: Green (BRAWL 2014)

Orange, orange, orange, orange...green? What could this mean for the Torang Prime mining plant?

My first time entering BRAWL! I have to say, aside from the light flicker (which I don't appear to have any control over atm) I'm rather pleased with this. There are a few minor things that are bugging me, but nothing that I have the time to fix before the deadline. So it's a little disappointing for me, but I'm glad I managed to do it all before the deadline.

And also, here is some additional canon for the film. Learn more about the planet and its supply of crystals! Note: this is meant to enhance the film, but you don't need to read this to understand it, nor does it serve as an explanation of my somewhat shaky plot.

I don't know if I shall be in a hurry to enter BRAWL next year...it's been pretty stressful, especially today (I had to render the film five times, due to some annoying bugs).

Re: Green (BRAWL 2014)

I didn't really understand why the leader said it wasn't important (the cover-up, I guess, but I didn't know that until I read the canon), and especially why the diggers thought it might be (how did they come to that conclusion?), but I'll comment on the other aspects of the film.
The quality of animation was great, a little bit choppy, but I'm putting that aside seeing as it's BRAWL. I really like the sets of yours, especially the mini-scale station. The digging effects were also well done, and looked good with the animation in general. Overall a good (first) BRAWL film, congratulations on getting it finished on time. mini/wink

Yeah, because of the time constraints, and the fact I had to reshoot some stuff, there were three short scenes I had to cut. I was hoping it would still all be clear without the added canon, but oh well. Also, the leader (Klank, but the name was revealed in one of the scenes I cut) never knew about the conspiracy.

The idea was that the digger had only ever seen orange] crystals, and so thought the mysterious, singular green] one was a big development. The leader dismissed it because they had a quota to fill, and didn't want to waste time on an abberation like the green one (originally the scene was going to be longer, and he was going to talk about how it was probably just the minor presence of another mineral, making the crystal impure, but I didn't have time to do that).

Still, I hope it's clear enough to the judges, though I'm annoyed at myself for not allocating time well enough to be able to shoot the whole thing. The blue scene] would have been fun to do.

Re: Green (BRAWL 2014)

I think this might be the best animation we've seen from you, it's getting smoother with every film you release; it's good to see you improving. As far as story goes, it makes sense one's you've read the background lore, but without it it's a film about keeping you're robot workers motivated; it feels a little aimless. The film would have benefited infinity with another minute of exposition, but I suppose that's the risk of BRAWL. The real strength of the film is it's visual style; it's a nice take on classic space, and it feels really fresh. good job. mini/smile

I know for next time to allot my time more wisely mini/smile looking back, it really needed those scenes I didn't have time to shoot, though I got most of the essential scenes and shots done.

I'm glad you liked the space stuff! Classic space is my favourite space theme (I have a couple of sets from the 80s) and I really wanted to make something that was a bit different, but at the same time was recognisable as classic space.

I really like the set design; I'd say it's the best part.  The teleporter effect was really nicely done as well.

As far as the story goes, it does feel rather rushed and incomplete, though it makes a lot more sense after reading the additional canon.  I suppose it's to be expected, given the time constraints.

Still, I enjoyed this film.  I love the visual style.

Is this for the BFCU?

Re: Green (BRAWL 2014)

I hadn't actually thought of making it BFCU, but I guess it is now! Added to the playlist.

I may do another short animation on the Torang Prime mine, though it wouldn't be as rushed as this. Given time, I think I could make something really cool.

Re: Green (BRAWL 2014)

I think you've done one of the best jobs of nicely incorporating the colour mod into the sets and such, which makes the colours of the film looks really nice.

There are a few very noticeable set bumps, though, which stand out especially so thanks to having a green screen backdrop.  It also feels a bit weird that the background isn't blurred enough which doesn't look right.  You probably should have blurred them more or changed your settings around to make the camera have less depth.  The dirt effects also feel a bit out of place because they seem too realistic whist everything around them is moving without any motion blur.

Re: Green (BRAWL 2014)

Those are some really nice set designs and effects!  I am so overwhelmed by all these BRAWL entries that I can't critique any of them but would rather praise you all for your wonderful entries!

Re: Green (BRAWL 2014)

This film is just as curious to me as the colour green is to the characters in this film. I'd like to see more. I liked the jackhammer effects, and the set design was very nicely done, too. Keep up the great work, Jampot! And congrats on making it through your first BRAWL!

Have you seen a big-chinned boy?

Re: Green (BRAWL 2014)

Thanks Mickey! I'm considering doing a sequel to Green set at the end of the mine's operation, thirty years later. Having got 10th in BRAWL, that sequel is starting to look more and more likely.

Re: Green (BRAWL 2014)

Nice job!  Congratulations on 10th place for your first BRAWL, that's impressive!
I don't have much to add to all that's already been said, but there is a few things I may as well say.

I really liked the sound, I thought it was quite good.  The effects were well done, the drilling and background (though there was a few small set bumps).  The framing was quite nice for most of it, and the sets were impressive.  My one complaint would be that it seemed really anticlimactic.  Like, nothing ever happened in it.  That probably would have been different with the scenes that had to be cut, but for what it was, the story itself was, in my opinion, the weakest point of it.  If you're able to expand the world that it's set in, wonderful!  That could add a lot to the video if it had kind of an explanation elsewhere.

I thought everything else was really good though, nice work!
