Topic: Studio Names

So back in 2010 I started getting more serious about animating even though I was still in elementary school. I wanted a studio name, so I took my username from my Club Penguin account, and replaced the end with "-mation" and Lavamation was the result. There is one issue with this name, though.

I hate it.
I hate it with a living passion.

I have been meaning to get a new name for the past couple years and just could never come up with one I liked. I look on BiM and see that everybody else has such nice studio names. Names that don't sound like your children trying to be cool, (which is what I think mine sounds like it's trying to do). I have thought about using my last name, (like Pritchard Studios), but my last name probably won't work for a permanent studio name. I want to know: How do you come up with studio names? How long did it take? and Where are some great places too look for names?
I would really appreciate your help.

Thanks!

Re: Studio Names

I also hate LegoAndStickfigs, but I don't really use it as a studio name anymore. Now, I kinda just use my name. Unfortunately, LegoAndStickfugs is forever my YouTube username.

I actually like Lavamation as a name. It has a ring to it.

Re: Studio Names

I'd tell you if I knew...I'm having the same issue.  I've been working off and on at trying to come up with a better 'studio' name, but literally every interesting word combination I've thought of so far is already an existing game or film studio/productions/pictures, etc.
I originally came up with JonnDthunDer because I really loved Johnny Thunder and kind of just changed how it sounds a little, since my initials are JDD I capatolized those letters and replaced the 'y' with a 'D' and got rid of the 'h', I don't really know why.  Obviously I can't use it forever but I've been trying to create something unique to me that is interesting, memorable, and simple.
Not really going so well...I may slowly transition over to just my name so that it's a little more professional than JonnDthunDer, but again, I'd really like to make a studio name.

So I'm in the same boat you're in right now.  If I actually come up with something decent I'll let you know how I did it.

Re: Studio Names

Let me take thee on a journey through space and time.

Way back in the mists of time, in November of the year of our Lord two-thousand-and-seven I was vexed by a single problem. At my seat of learning, the school in which I was to spend the next five years, the education staff didst ask students if they had any abbreviations for their forenames. For instance, a Benjamin might become a Ben, while a Frederick might metamorphose into Fred. But they were all of them deceived.

For in the tutor group of 7C2, I was attempting to forge for myself a shorter forename, but my name is Jack, and already only a single syllable. I decided the only way was to remove a letter, and in that moment a nickname was created in the fires of jealous teenaged phases: one nickname to rule them all.

I become Jam.

Okay, it's late and I'm going to have to stop the archaic speech. It was fun, but I'm giving up now.

Anyway, I had only been into brickfilming for about three months by that point, and my parents didn't want me putting my animations that had my real name plastered throughout the credits up on the internet. I had to come up with a studio name, so I went with the Jam thing and was Jampot Productions. A couple of years later, a publisher from New Zealand also known as Jampot Productions kindly asked if I would change my name as they could not make a blog in the name of their company because I had taken it, so I changed to Jam Pot Studios, which I've been ever since. I love it, to be honest, though if I ever set up a proper production company, it will be under another name that I've had stored away for a couple of years now.

I don't think Lavamation is bad at all, but you need to capitalise on it more. Make an avatar. Make a logo. Make a banner. And make it all to do with lava. Make something epic out of 'Lavamation', because Lavamation is already a very memorable title in itself.

Re: Studio Names

'funmiproductions' feel a little cheap to me. I made it when I was 12 because I was obsessed with copying Walt Disney I've been thinking of changing it, but no ideas come to mind. The name needs to stand out.

Re: Studio Names

It took us probably 3 years to decide on a name that we liked, GEF is not my studio name but just my initials (thank goodness), but when one of us was like, "How about Legendary Brick Studio?" it was like, "Yup! that's it." And we still love how it sounds.

As far as Lavamation goes, it ain't bad. Like Jampot said, it's memorable, and that can go a long way.

Re: Studio Names

I've never been too fond of my current names. I felt the need to do something a little more, "professional" shall we say, so I came up with Studio 477 (because reasons, such as legocloniac477). I've been going by both for the last, I think, two years. But alas like all filmmakers, I need to settle with one in particular.

I've come up with a name that I'm proud of, but I haven't started using it yet. I think I'm waiting until I can get a logo worked out before I go public with it. The only problem with the name I thought up, it was already taken. Or at least there was a website, but there wasn't any work on it. Just an empty site. I have a few back ups if this one doesn't work out.

I agree with LASF, I like Lavamation. Just like he said, it has a ring to it.

Re: Studio Names

For once I am actually quite happy with one of my crappy studio names. I don't remember how I came up with this name though. BUT my old name that I dreamed at age 9 or something is awful:

"MRlegobuilder987"

Ugh. I was so happy that YouTube let me change it, it was so embarrassing. I had the tendency to just type bunch of random words or letter to create my usernames (kind of like how I did with my embarrassing email...which I use to this day)

no more brickfilming *sad face*.

Yes, as a 12 year old, I set up embarrassment for myself for life.

Re: Studio Names

I also thought up my username when I was young, however, I don't dislike it, in fact, I'm quite fond of it.  I did it because I made a lot of weird noises in front of a microphone, as I've been interested in doing all the sound design myself since near the beginning.  I kept playing those sounds and noises back which annoyed people, and that's where I got the name Annoying Noises Productions, shortened to ANP most of the time.

Though it first is was called Annoying Noises Inc. but I changed it after not very long.  My mother created a YouTube channel for me at one point and use Inc instead of productions, which angered me greatly, but I've been able to change my channel's name since then, and I'm quite happy of that.

I love Just Kidden.  Just Kidden is such a great name.  Perfect.  Don't hate it, your name is beautiful.

Re: Studio Names

My studio name has always been "END films" (the red END appeared in my very first brickfilms) but my old YouTube though was called "NESComando44" using my initials and my old LEGO.com/my old universal username for all accounts but when I created my own Google account (the old channel was connected to my parents' account) I soon created my own channel "ENDfilms44" (because no spaces were allowed and "ENDfilms" was apparently taken) since the forced Google+ connection I have changed it to my studio name.

Re: Studio Names

Well, obviously I went the lazy route.
Been branding stuff like that basically as long as I've been brickfilming. Probably because it sounds more official than just saying "Made by Mr. Pritchard" but still includes my name so people I know in real life can find it easy.
I've got another way cooler username for non-brickfilming stuff, but this is my Youtube name, and I like it.

And to address the true issue at hand, I like Lavamation.
If you don't, then change it, but you could really make a sweet title screen and logo and things based off of that name.
But if you wanna change, be sure it's something amazing and that you'll wanna stick with it for a while.

Really though, a studio name doesn't have to start out great, you have to make it great. Bionicle28 isn't that original, but because of his work, it reminds me of some great films, and therefore it has taken on a positive meaning. Whatever you do, embrace it, and make that name great.

Re: Studio Names

I think Lavamation is a pretty neat studio name, but if you really want another then maybe your real name might be a good place to start looking.  That's how I came up with OneDouglas Studios.  Otherwise here are some names I thought of: Glowing Lava Productions, BrickLabs, Lava Minfig Films, or maybe ThatLegoDude.

Re: Studio Names

Hmmmm, I guess if I look at Lavamation from your perspective, it's not too bad of a name. I've never really looked at it in the light you guys see it in. I guess it just seems silly to me as I got it from such a small and unimportant part of my childhood, but from another view, I kind of like it. Also, I can still change it in the future since it is just a hobby at the moment. I mean look at Dylan Woodley, he was known as NXTManiac94 for most of his older videos.
But because of hearing what you think of it, I'm actally happy with Lavamation. mini/smile

I guess it's all perspective.

Thanks, guys! You really helped! mini/bigsmile

Re: Studio Names

I too have had my gripes with studio names. I started by going through the lazy route, taking my first name and adding productions to it. "Dylan's Productions" was my original idea for a studio, and, even at 12, I knew that it wasn't going to work. So, I looked to Walt Disney studios, and wondered what my studio name would be if I had a theme-park. Dylan's Productions Park simply would not do... But, Dyland would. (Pronounced like Dill-and, a cross between Dylan and Land)

However, after a few years of using it on my eventual youtube channel, I started getting messages that spelled it "dylan d productions." I did not want to be known as "Dylan D" Productions, as, I feared that someone with the same first name, but last name with the initial "D" would come after my channel, so, I opted for a name change.

I tried out "Open Door Films" on day after I created a pretty cool logo as seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNj6laltyhs
I was still using this title just one year ago...

Realizing that "Open Door" just wasn't growing on me, I opted for a logo with a hint of an homage in it. Thus, Troll-Bridge Studios was created so I could use a certain sound effect under my logo, as seen in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NGk19shsDk For those brickfilm-buffs (or, whatever die-hard brickfilm fans call themselves) will instantly recognize the roar, as it was featured in Nathan Well's "Beast." - I thought that it was a pretty cool homage, but, soon I realized that "Troll-Bridge Studios" wasn't really a good fit. I am not a troll, and, don't do such activities associated with the internet-slang for jerk, so, I decided upon looking for something else.

In the end, I was thinking about going back to The Dyland Productions. The title just had so much nostalgia for me, and, I had actually started to miss the name... Something I think that some of you may also feel if you go down a path of "constant name changes," as I did.

But, destiny seemed to intervene, as, when I requested a name change of my BiM account from Smeagol, he summed it up best in his reply:

Smeagol wrote:

So many usernames with "The" and "Productions." It always feels like dead wood to me.

I agreed. Perhaps "The Dyland Productions" had been great in 2007, 2010, and even early 2012, but, it was a little out-dated and, I really wanted to stand out from the crowd.

Smeagol wrote:

Why not just Dyland?

- Perfect.

Thus, I'll end my post restating the two morals I want to give out: If you're thinking of changing your studio name, just remember that, even though you may hate it now, you may miss it in the future. And, NEVER have "The" or "Productions" in your title. - Then, the technical "producing" credit on you films would be "The Dyland Productions Presents," and, that just sounds stupid.

With "Dyland," I'm able to utilize "A Dyland Production," "Dyland Presents," and "Dyland Productions," all while keeping with a sound and simple pseudonym - Dyland.

Re: Studio Names

KB Videos is my current studio, but it seems small for what I want to make, which is movies. Films. Not just cheap videos.

I'm thinking of changing it to KB Productions or KB Studios. I'm more happy with the KB part than when I was KAB Productions.

Re: Studio Names

I won't comment on the name Lavamation itself, because I'm really bad at coming up with names, etc. (I use a random name generator to get the names of most of my characters), so I don't feel like I can comment. What I will say is that the story behind where you got your studio name can really effect how you feel about your own work, at least subconsciously. I came up with BackarydLegos because when I started I was animating on a LEGO city I had built in a building in our backyard, hence the name. Now it reminds me of how I started out, and how far I've come, and I feel even more proud of what I'm able to accomplish now. If you associate your name with childish behavior that you're trying to avoid, that negative feeling you have toward your name may transfer onto the work you have done under that name. Basically what I'm saying is that if you don't like it, change it. It's not like it's on your birth certificate, and you want to put a name you like on work that you spend time and energy on. Also, if you don't like the name, until you come up with one you do like, don't put Lavamation on your videos so the name doesn't stick around once you do change it.

Re: Studio Names

I've been pretty content with Brickhead Productions, which is really just a play on words from a slightly vulgar term. The immaturity I had at the time found it hilarious. The immaturity I continue to cultivate finds it amusing.

What haunts me is my Youtube channel name. "SpiderSock". It was just a dumb mashup of a couple of words created in desperation when I was much younger and desperately trying to find a Youtube username that wasn't already taken. And now that's locked in, seemingly forever, unless I want to start fresh and lose the subscribers and followers and junk associated with the account.
