Topic: Silantro - Clips and tests

I will be posting my clips and special effects/stop-motion tests for Silantro on this thread.

I'm determined to make this series to the best of my abilities, so feedback is encouraged, welcome and needed.

Here is my first test video:

In my personal opinion, what needs the most work is the chroma-keying (one of my biggest weaknesses) in the third flying test.

Re: Silantro - Clips and tests

The chroma keying as pretty bad, that's true, but some of the animation is really getting there. The second flying test was the best of the flying clips, the movement felt fairly natural and the pacing was good, it just needs to be smoothed out a bit (I realize this may be hard with the clicking joints you're using on the model). The second walking test was way better than the first, but it still felt very jerky, I think more intermediate frames and more stable movements with fewer unintentional variations are essential. The animation in the earthquake test was quite good. Your improvement is evident within the video, keeping working at it and I think you could make this dragon really cool. mini/smile

Thanks for the feedback.

I thought the walking looked a little awkward in both tests, but I wanted to make sure it wasn't just me. That's definitely something I will be working to improve before I begin filming the first episode.

Expect more tests in the future.

Re: Silantro - Clips and tests

The chroma keying was not very good, and the flying movements are okay, they need some work though.

The chroma-keying and walking are definitely going to be addressed before I start filming.

Re: Silantro - Clips and tests

you need a better green screen or better program for the chroma keying.

I for one prefer to use a rig and rotoscope each frame. It's more time consuming but it can deliver a better quality image than something like this.

The digital pans always kill me. Try and make those more practical.

A Life? Cool! Where can I download one of those from?

Re: Silantro - Clips and tests

The chroma keying isn't that bad. I would add a bit more blur to the edges. What makes it look bad is the lack of color correction. You need to color correct the dragon to match with the background.

I might end up doing it frame-by-frame. Also, I plan on getting better lamps in the near future.

You're right about the color-correction issue Hoever, my foremost concern is the background stuff that I can't chroma-key out without taking some of Silantro with it. I plan on attempting the "garbage matte" method (cropping the background junk out of the frame)

Update (4/2/14)

I just wanted to let everybody know that I appreciate your feedback. It would appear that there are more issues that need to be addressed than I thought.

Expect another test video in the near future.

I have posted another Silantro SFX/stop-motion test clip. In addition to addressing the problems in the previous test video, I also try my hand at some other special effects.

Once again, feedback is strongly encouraged.
