Abduction: The Test

Watch it happen...

Well, finally posted something else. This is an old, non-participating entry to the Animation Challenge circa May 2012. Yes, you read that right, this video is almost two years old. Better late than never I suppose.

The title is a play on words, referencing what might be happening within the "story" of the video, and also the fact that pretty much everything about this video was a first time test except for the raw stop motion part of it. This was the first time for pretty much everything else: non trivial lighting setups, extensive VFX, masking, sound, editing, and production pipeline.

Trivia:
-I finished the stop motion easily within the week allotted to the animation challenge.
-After starting VFX, I realized I was never going to finish in time so slowed down, intending to finish over the next week or so.
-It took me another three months (*sigh*).
-After rotting on my hard drive for over a year, I whipped up a title animation and credits in one evening and finished it all up.
-I'm finally posting it, yet another several months later.
-Maybe I'll start finalizing some of the other (many) tests I have done and uploading them.
-How many scenes have visual effects? (Ok, ok, not a fact, but hey...)

Re: Abduction: The Test

Wonderful job!

The lighting was absolutely fantastic and the change of expression from the man on the lamp post was brilliant and made me laugh.

Well done! Glad this video finally saw the light of day.

Re: Abduction: The Test

I clicked on this just thinking it would be a generic film about someone getting abducted Taken-style, but I was honestly blown away by the frankly superb animation and really nice lighting [although it was kind of weird-looking how after the lamp went off things actually got a bit brighter].
Really well done, I can tell a lot of effort went into the technical aspects on this. I'll be looking forward to more stuff from you.

Spoiler (click to read)

Though, your title is the same as a similar series by Nick Durron.

Re: Abduction: The Test

That light getting brighter is actually something I have seen in movies, just so that things are not too dark.

Great movie, everything is very well done mini/wink.

Re: Abduction: The Test

Nice job!
The animation was smooth, the spot-light effect looked good, and the sounds/music also complimented the visuals well.
Brightening the frame once the light went out did look odd, and usually if movies do that, they cut to a different angle with the brighter light to disguise the fact that it's brighter. It makes for a more seamless transition. But otherwise you pulled everything off superbly.

Re: Abduction: The Test

Really nice animation, some of the more difficult and unique actions were really well done. Great job. mini/smile

Re: Abduction: The Test

That was really cool, AnW. The animation, effects, everything was spot-on. And you used sound effects perfectly - not too many, not too few. Really great. mini/wink

Re: Abduction: The Test

Hey guys, thanks for the comments! Glad you enjoyed it, although it is short, it took awhile to make and it is nice to see that some people liked it.

Regarding the the increase in brightness a couple of you guys have mentioned, yeah, it did come off as a bit obvious. If I remember correctly, I decided to not change the camera angle to hide the transition because my physical set was so small that I didn't have a lot of choice for other interesting wide shots. Thus, to save on set extension effort, I just kept the same camera position. Not perfect, but O well.
