THAC 11 Test Animations

Wilson and I have animated over 1000 frames of animation to get ready for THAC.  I think that this is one of my most delightful test montages yet.

Feel free to use and of these techniques in your own films.  Many of these are experimental, some are old tricks I was just trying to see if I could still do properly, and some are really weird and random.  I'll explain anything in more detail if you wish.

How did you do the night lighting?

My lighting setup remained the same for both day and night.  I have two large floor dish lamps pointed at the ceiling with some daylight blue bulbs.  To make it look like night, I changed the backdrop and messed with my setting on my camera.  I just made sure that it absorbed less light and I changed the white balance to give it a more blueish hue.  For the last two shots, I realized that I should also set the camera to be less saturated, which I think improved the look.

What does your animation setup look like? *any chance of some pictures pweeez?* I'm intrigued by the concept of animating on the floor.

You misunderstand.  I animate on a table, but I have really big lamps which rest on the floor.

This is actually my old studio, so the ceiling of my new one is much more roomy, but I still have the lamps and table.  I probably should take some pictures of my new one, but it looks mostly like this.

Though, Before I am the Night I DID animate on the floor, although it was a very clean floor.  This, however, was a horrible thing to do.  You can't duck under a table when you take a frame to avoid reflection flickering.  This is common in Bank and all of the films before that where I sat uncomfortably on the floor, which really hurt after a while.

Re: Squid's THAC 11 Test Animations

Ducking under the table? I just wear a black sweatshirt with a hood (and take off my glasses) and I don't have reflection flicker unless it's my minifigs reflecting it (which gets really annoying)

Wow, I really liked the set design mini/smile

I'm so happy you used that music.

Nice animation, but the tests I were most impressed by were the lighting ones, they looked really nice.

Also, what desk is that, I was thinking of getting a tripod for a camera and that desk looks useful to a dilemma I was in over it.

Re: Squid's THAC 11 Test Animations

It's a custom table.  There is a big table and them a custom miniature table which rests under it.  The legs of the mini table are made out of Duplo blocks so the the height can be adjusted for its relation to the tri-pod.  The topmost blocks have actually been screwed in to the mini table itself.

Another thing which would also be good is to use Encyclopedias.

To my memory, it has never occurred.

Re: Squid's THAC 11 Test Animations

The sci-fi, dungeon and medieval sets were just wonderful. The camera movements in those shots – all of those were in shot, I guess? How did you do those camera movements?

Also, that warp jump – was that in shot too? If yes, how did you do that?

He's talking about the flickering light, I guess.

I think that this is a problem from the camera, not the lamps.

No. I was talking about accidentally kicking the lamp causing it to topple over to his table and smash his set into little pieces mini/blankexpression  . Luckily he said it has never happened. mini/tongue

Oh and I looked that squids setup image again and it would need rather powerful kick to do unintentionally. mini/lol
