Re: What was the last movie you watched?

A pretty good movie! I found it really weird that an animated movie got a PG-13 rating for scary images and stuff. (It wasn't that scary at all though, since it's animated) I also really like the concept of the film and how the director took the post-apocalyptic cliche in a new direction. It has it's downsides though. The voice acting wasn't the most fitting, and the enemy robot things kept attacking 9 and his group which became a little redundant. That being said, I've seen much, much worse animated films. Like seriously, horrifically worse.

But yeah, I'd give it an 8/10.

Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?

A thoroughly enjoyable movie. The odd goofiness along with the stellar music selections really made this movie for me.

The Good, the Bad, and Ugly

Classic Western with an awesome score by Ennio Morricone.
I really liked how the director focused more on the buildup than the actual action, as it felt more realistic.

Wild Target (2009)

I liked it.  With weird characters, a funny (if somewhat predictable) storyline, and several funny moments it was quite enjoyable.  Bill Nighy is great, and it was funny to see Martin Freeman play a completely different character than Watson from Sherlock.  I did feel, however, that the film on the whole was somewhat rushed, and the characters could definitely have benefited from more development.

Still, I really liked it.

Apollo 13 (1995)

A great watch. Ed Harris is spectacular, with a top-notch performance from Sinise and Bacon as well. While the VFX aren't "jaw-dropping", it's a great storyline that's based on a true story. And the parts with Walter Cronkite's archival footage were awesome.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Well, for a short spoiler-free review, I will say that it diverts away from Tolkien even more that AUJ, but most of it is pulled off well. It suffers a lot from being the second in a trilogy, but will be vastly improved once TaBa comes out.
As with AUJ, I loved some scenes, and wasn't so hot on others, but overall quite liked it.

As a stand alone movie, it's probably the weakest of the five, but once it is put into it's place in the saga, it will serve as a very valuable and enjoyable piece of the puzzle. Unlike AUJ, I find myself agreeing with a lot of the reviewers over on TheOneRing.net, overall good, but did get a certain few things wrong.

Is it worth paying to see it in theaters?

no more brickfilming *sad face*.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

YES, of course. If for no other reason than to simply see Gandalf in Dol Guldor on the big screen.
It's just a lot better if you know a bit about the Hobbit and some of the extra history that happens/get referenced.
You will be mad to see the credits roll though.... mini/eh

Does it tease Smaug, just like it did in AUJ?

The Matrix

Watched this movie for the first time in almost a decade a few days ago. Great effects, story, and acting. Still holds up well after fourteen years.

In what way exactly?

Spoiler (click to read)

It does show simple glimpses of him until the confrontation scene between him and Bilbo, (Which is roughly two hours in) and then reveals him in all of his glory in quite a number of great shots.

Does that answer it?

Also, in case I wasn't clear, it's a great movie, go see it. But it just won't reach it's full potential until the EE and TaBa come out.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

As usual, the music, effects, locations, sets, makeup, costumes, and props are all basically top notch (except for the molten gold looks a bit off, and there's this one part where a goblin's foot looks extremely rubbery, but it's still pretty great).
The best part about it all is probably Smaug, who is nothing short of the greatest dragon I've ever seen in a film before.  His design is brilliant.  I especially like that he has only two legs and his wings kinda double as hands and yet don't actually look awkward.  The motion capture really adds to it and he shows so much expression without looking weird or cartoony.  You can really see Benedict's eyebrows on him.  His scenes are the highlights of the film.

The story goes way off from the book, though, really, really, really off.  I'm usually okay with adding stuff like was done in the first film, but some of the stuff does feel a bit weird.

I'm a bit annoyed  that a few good lines were omitted, such as Smaug telling Bilbo that he "ate six ponies this morning"  or the bit where he's describing himself and the ending part where he calls his breath death is missing, which is a bit of a bother because that line was so good.  A similar line appears later on, but it's not the same.

It leaves you really wanting to see the next part, which, unfortunately, will not come out for a year even though it was supposed to be next Summer before. mini/tongue

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Oh, so it does show him? Just wondering if it would tease him like AUJ did. I sat through 170 minutes of that film waiting for Smaug...now that I know that DoS shows him, I think I might just go see it after all.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I'm surprised he's in the second film. It makes me wonder what on earth their going to do for the third film - considering that in the book Bilbo's confrontation with Smaug is very close to the end. Unless their going for the Michael Bay approach and have the first 30mins of the film be exposition, and then have a 100min long climax.

I've heard mixed reviews for The Desolation of Smaug. I'm a bit dissapointed that it hasn't fixed the biggest problem with AUJ (the problem being that its more padded than the last cell I was in), but obviously I'm going to wait until I see it before I start brandishing my pitchfork/gushing like a broken toilet/moving my head from side-to-side in indifference - all of which this film might do.

It should be the Battle of Five Armies, so I'm sort of expecting a Return of the King-like film with the battle taking up nearly the whole film. Then the trip back to the Shire is actually not so short, so that will probably be most of the resolution. And then there will be a bunch of scenes from Peter Jackson also.

I actually think it might be the weakest in the trilogy from the sound of it, although I haven't seen DoS yet.

Same here. I had been debating on whether or not to go see it in the cinema, with my two Boy Scout friends, just like last year with AUJ. People on Rotten Tomatoes had been saying stuff like "it's an improvement on the first film", but at the same time, those same reviewers say "it sucks".

Personally, I've been highly, ahem, critical of critics ever since every one of them and their mothers panned Man of Steel for reasons that really didn't make any sense.  (These were the same people who praised The Avengers?  Hah.)

SO you liked Man of Steel but not the Avengers?
