Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Nice work.  I'm not sure why, but I really like the bright blue background, which gives a nice contrast.  I think the round side-tower-things could use a bit of fleshing out, though, and the whole set is a little low.  Also the two rock faces look far too symmetrical.  The door looks a bit chunky too (though maybe it's just the angle) but I really like the colouring of it (sand green is an awesome colour, I wish I had more of if, hehe).

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Nice and simple, I like it. Maybe add a mini-scale wall or tower or something behind, making it look that much more realistic.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Wow, nice.
I second Flyingminifigs comments, and also recommend adding stuff to the top to make it several bricks higher.
That way, you can add more foliage, and make it more castle-like and not entrance-into-the-king's-private-garden-like.

It's neither movie nor book accurate, but somewhere in between. I also needed something that I could actually build. Same goes for the king of the wood-elves himself.

Obviously, this'll look better in-frame, once I've sorted out backgrounds and blue screens and grading and all that other jazz.

BTW Mac-users, what's the best Mac stop-motion freeware? FrameByFrame's low-quality renders are beginning to annoy me.

That's looking great; I'm looking forward to it! As for a Mac animation software, I find iStopmotion very good to use, and it's not expensive at all. If you use a webcam, an app called "Webcam Settings" is a good way to go for manual settings. On some webcams however, you can't actually operate the manual focus with this app (the Pro 9000 for example). I use the C300, which has a manual focus ring and goes for a very low price, but it actually has surprisingly good quality. I got this suggestion from a brickfilmer called HarryAndBillyBrick, so you can check out some of his stuff to see for yourself. I'm not entirely sure, but I believe that either C910 or C920 (or maybe both) while without a manual focus ring, are able to be manually focused through Webcam Settings. I'd perhaps browse through the forums a bit, since there was a discussion like this not so long ago.

If you don't use a webcam, there's a list of still cameras that have worked for iStopmotion users. And you can always download the trial and try and see if your camera works with the software. Good luck!

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

I always take my stills separately on a DSLR and then put them into the software, but thanks for the suggestion. I have very little money right now, so I'll have to wait on buying iStopmotion, but thanks for the suggestion.

As for Greenwood, I do plan on adding a little more foliage, but the shots themselves will be quite compact, in that it will fill the whole frame - the bluescreen is just the generic background in my shooting space. One thing I might do, for longer shots, is add more foliage digitally, especially about the top and the two rock faces.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

I do like the Elf (I cannot seem to remember his name) with the merman's seashell crown, good parts usage. I personally avoid using fake brick print panels, but I think they do work in this instance. The face of the elf in the background is a bit drab comparatively to the one a the front. Finally, I'd add some height and a lot more foliage.

Also, heed Tobias' plan of action - iStopmotion is very good in both value and quality.

I plan to, I just can't afford it right now. The place I sometimes work at doesn't need me back for another month yet, so I'm not making much money.

I'd love to make it taller, too. It was originally going to be a huge set, and have a bridge leading up to the steps, but then I realised that most of my dark grey and brown bricks have gone into making Ryujin, and I'm not ready to take him apart yet. I'll see what I can work out.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

I finished my dumpsters:

Because I have very few dark green bricks, I went about puzzling around with pieces for about a week trying to make it and digging through bins for those little extra pieces I needed.  Eventually I found a way to make them with my limited supplies.  It's a good thing they won't be seen from the back.

I'm probably going to keep these and re-use them throughout the film as needed.

Those look real good, ANP. mini/yes

EDIT: Here are some shots of the set I'm using for my upcoming GO-FILM 2013 entry.

Have you seen a big-chinned boy?

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Nice, ANP! What's it for again?

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Very nice! I really like the angle in that frame!

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

I like it, but what did you do to keep that long plate from wobbling during filming?

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

That bridge looks so cool.

It actually looks like this but the lighting makes rest of the bridge disappear.

That's a neat trick, Verkku.

mini/eek
That's the trick they used in Indy 3 right?
I can see it now, but that is a great illusion, and works fantastically.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

I hope this isn't the wrong place to post this, but I'm in need of some set help. I'd like to build a small clearing in a forest, but I'm not sure what a good design that would be easy to animate a scene in would be. Does anyone have any tips/good pieces/examples of a good forest that I might be able to learn from?

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Hmm, I do better with seeing something and critiquing/building on that, but here's some thoughts. Make the clearing on the larger size. You can use camera angles and things to make it look smaller, but you'll still need to get your hand in there. Also, find out what kind of forest you want. Bionicle28's Strangers series has some nice forest work, but Olsonstudio's 'Hidden' has a completely different style.
