Ozymandias

YouTube

In a post-apocalyptic future, two young boys are inspired to dig for treasure in the desert. They find a lot more than they bargained for...

There's a bit of annoying light flicker and camera shake, and the aspect ratio is completely wrong, but overall I'm glad with how this turned out.

The narration is the poem Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley, who's just about the only poet I can stand. The poem's awesome, and you'll understand this film better if you've read it.

This is my practical coursework for my A2 Film Studies course. The brief was that we had to make a 3 to 5 minute short film, but it could be any genre. I actually started off doing a short about air pollution, but that didn't work, and neither did my next film diea that was going to be about  shadows and stuff, but I'm glad I ended up making this. I think my teachers were all pleased that I did a stop-motion, since it's vastly different to what other students were doing.

Re: Ozymandias

The story was good, and kept me interested the whole time, but the execution could use some work. The biggest distraction was the set/camera bumps, you should really do what you can to get rid of those, and the animation definitely needs more frames to smooth it out. I also couldn't hear what the old man was saying when he was talking over the kids discovery, although that could be my computer (my sound card is a bit messed up). On the plus side the voice acting was really good, the best part of the film as far as execution goes. mini/smile

Re: Ozymandias

Yeah, I'm pretty well aware of the camera bumps. I only managed to get it sorted after I'd finished shooting all of this, and due to college deadlines I didn't have time to go back and reshoot. But I was aware of that, and I know it's quite noticeable. Believe it or not, it was worse than that before I put it through After Effects' motion stabiliser.

And you might want to listen with headphones. I spent ages on the audio levels and my teachers all said they could hear it well, but I know that it's quite mumbly and might be hard to hear.

Re: Ozymandias

Ozymandias is one of my favourite poems of all time, so I was very pleased to see a film inspired. mini/smile  And I liked it.

The light flicker was somewhat noticeable, and also the CGI shots looked a bit off--especially the ones towards the end.  However, I really like the atmosphere created by the music choice and the voice-over, and how you used that HP tower roof brick.

I knew they'd come in useful someday! mini/lol

And Ozymandias is an awesome poem. I just find it annoying when people at college think it's about Watchmen.

Re: Ozymandias

It was nicely animated, but the light flickering just took away from it. Make sure your camera is set to manual everything.

Most of the time that is caused by the Auto White balance in your camera.

A Life? Cool! Where can I download one of those from?

Everything is set to manual. It's just that there's nowhere in my house that doesn't have a massive, un-coverable window nearby, and shooting at night is a no-no for me.

BTW does anyone know how I can get rid of that stupid avatar for the film? I didn't upload it, and it's really bugging me.

Re: Ozymandias

Hate to bump a long-dead thread, but Ozymandias just won Best Short Film at my college's Film and Media awards! I'm super-happy as this is basically the most prestigious award of the lot. It was nominated for Production, but won overall! Honestly, brickfilming has been the least rewarding hobby I could have picked and I've had so much hate from people for it over the last seven years, but finally I've been recognised! I don't have to sit in anyone's elses shadow for tonight. Tonight I get to say that I won a college "Oscar" (yeah yeah, it's cheesey) and was second to nobody. This means a huge deal to me, and I'm so happy that I managed to pull the best award with a brickfilm. It's like saying 'stuff you' to all the people who've bullied me over the years, and it feels great. Tonight, I'm not a weirdo for being a brickfilmer, and you have no idea how refreshing that is.

Thanks to all of you guys, for supporting me on this forum, for watching my films and commenting, or even just chatting in Cafe Corner or General Film threads. Even when I had no friends at school, I knew I could come here, and while I spent a lot of time inactive for various reasons, it was great to know that there was one place where I didn't have to hide what I do.

Here's the trophy, in all its plastic glory! Sorry it's a bit blurry, but I was in a rush to take the photo.

Re: Ozymandias

Sweet!
I know how it feels to win even a smaller prize, but winning something that big in front of all your peers must be amazing. The uniqueness of brickfilms does tend to help them in contests/film festivals, but winning something against college-level competition like that is still a great accomplishment.

And you're welcome. It's been great having you here and seeing your contributions to the community as well as seeing your high quality work. Keep it up, and take this as a lesson that doing good does have it's rewards in the end.

Re: Ozymandias

Congratulations for winning this award! Even if it's in plastic, the trophy is really cool. mini/sunnies
Hard work always pays!
And, if you still have lightflicking problems, you can try VirtualDub with MSUDeflicker (it's free!)

Re: Ozymandias

At least you get your name on it. The trophy I won for Vader's Birthday was generic.

The guy who got banned more times than DiCaprio said "f***" in The Wolf Of Wall Street.
