Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread
The one on the far right would be Clara Oswald, would it not?
PushOver put it quite nicely, brilliant!

Don't you guys mean brilliant? ![]()
Anyway, thanks--I'm really glad you liked it. And yeah, yopu're right Mighty, that's meant to be Clara. You got most of the characters right, too, PushOver--that is incidentally the Eleventh Doctor (I actually thought he'd be the easiest to to figure out, I have no idea who Jack Benny is...). The one on the far left isn't Nine (he's got too much hair for that
), although it's a good guess.
And, since I've now built the outside, I've inevitably started work on the TARDIS console room. It's coming along nicely, and I should have some pics up soon.
Don't you guys mean brilliant?
Actually, that's exactly what is meant.
This makes me want to build my own LEGO tardis.
Oh yeah, sorry about that...
hope you don't mind.
Anyway, I really like it, especially the way you combined standard bricks and BIONICLE/Technic elements. Also, the scale is impressive. I don't really get why he just randomly seems to grow out of a rock, though. And maybe teh tide-jewels should be a bit more prominent.
I imagine he must be a pain to animate, though.
The sea god dragon looks great.
Thanks!

The idea is that when he first appears, there's this impressive first shot of him rising out of the sea bed, and from there he interacts with the main character with half of his body still buried. Also, I don't want to animate legs or a long tail. Not only did he use up most of my brown system and BIONICLE parts, but I hate animating BIONICLE legs. They're a supermassive pain to do, and a tail would be the same. I'm hoping it all shows up well in the final edit.
And I'm not sure about the tide-jewels. I mean, I'm thinking that they should be more spread out, and if I have enough blue jewel pieces i might use them instead. I'm going to make them glow a bit in After Effects, which should help.
I imagine he must be a pain to animate, though.
I haven't tried yet. I've built his arms and neck so that they're really poseable but sturdy, so they should be fine, but I don't want to start on that film until I've sorted out my light flicker problems.
After I built the outside, I inevitably decided to build the TARDIS console.

A couple of close-ups of the console:

As you can see in the first pic, I've added a rough outline of where the walls will go. Now I need to add them, but frankly, I'm stumped. I've tried loads of combinations, but I either don't have enough bricks, or it doesn't look right. Any ideas?
Y'see, I think the console is about the right size, and I love the addition of the trans-blue meteorite piece in the center! All the littler details are fun too, all the dashboards and remotes that you've added - they're really zany and all different to each other, which captures the spirit of the 11th Doctor well.
I really love the interior! Great work! as far as the walls, I would suggest simply fooling with it until you get it right!
Thanks!
I guess any TARDIS interior (well, New Who interior) is a nightmare to recreate in LEGO since they all have a sort of organic look and have lots of unusual colours and shapes. I do have several ideas for the walls, it's just I don't have enough of the right bricks to use any of them to fully complete the walls. I'll have to see though...
Incidentally, this isn't meant to specifically represent the 11th Doctor's TARDIS--it's kind of something between a blend of all the TARDISes and my own interpretation. I just stuck my minifigs of Eleven and Clara on there just because they happened to be the nearest available ones I happened to have at the time. That said, I do think I was mainly influenced by the 11th Doctor's 2010-2012 TARDIS (though you can see some elements that were present in Nine and Ten's TARDIS, such as the three-seater chair).

Haha, thanks! I'm glad you noticed the meteor brick! The dashboards and controls were also the funnest thing to build--I mostly just grabbed all my sci-fi and computer bricks and printed tiles and randomly combined them to see what looked best (I also suspect this is how the BBC makes many of their Doctor Who props, too...
) Although, I did try to consciously echo the feel of DW by mostly using bricks from old/"classic" LEGO themes, since much of the technology in DW has a retro sort of feel, and also many of my old Life on Mars bricks, since those have a sort of organic look to them that is actually quite similar to stuff in the TARDIS...
I made another set for I Am The Night:

I'm sorry that they're so dark, they don't look as much that way if they're not up against the bright colours of BiM, but I should probably brighten it up a notch or two before I animate.
I made it nice and roomy so I'd have plenty of space for fighting, though, I just realized that a dumpster would look really good here. Anyone know any good dumpster designs?
This one looks pretty nice (though might need a color change):
It's from the Krusty Krab set, set number 3825.
Nice set. You must have a lot of grey bricks....
Nothing specific here, but I think something using these or these bricks as the lid/cover of the dumpster would look great--especially if you want a character to jump out of one, or something like that.
You must have a lot of grey bricks....
Oh, I do, but this one took me very near my limit. A lot closer than I wanted to be, and I had to make a few compromises to stretch it.
I usually go out of my way to get more dark grey bricks since I use then for almost everything.
I probably wouldn't use a dumpster from a set, but if I could find enough of those swooshy bricks that would make for some nice detail, I might be able to cannibalize some from the Bat-Mobile.
I wasn't planning to have it open, but again I haven't really planned this fight scene very much at all. I usually improvise fight scenes, thinking only a few moves in advance.
Here's a dumpster design for you, Squid.

I like those flap pieces. I tried going through my bins to find those, but I've only found two so far.
It's a horrible shame I don't have many dark green pieces. I'd love to make my dumpster dark green, but it'll probably have to be blue or green, which will draw to itself a little too much emphasis since it'll be brightest thing there. He he.
The dumpster should definitely be a subdued color if at all possible.
This is Greenwood/Mirkwood from my upcoming Halloween animation (hopefully), and (equally as hopefully) a couple of future animations I'd like to do.

It's neither movie nor book accurate, but somewhere in between. I also needed something that I could actually build. Same goes for the king of the wood-elves himself.
Obviously, this'll look better in-frame, once I've sorted out backgrounds and blue screens and grading and all that other jazz.
BTW Mac-users, what's the best Mac stop-motion freeware? FrameByFrame's low-quality renders are beginning to annoy me.
