Topic: New idea for feature on site

Hi, i came up with an idea i know we do have a recourses tab but there doesn't seem to be much video tutorials i think a tutorials tab or sub tab is needed so there can be video tutorials uploaded just like video copilot (half copying them) except with all kinds of tutorials not just AE even just put a video tutorial section in the resources tab.

Re: New idea for feature on site

Well, there are several things at play here.
Most importantly is the fact that our resources section is hardly used/updated with new content/promoted/noticed.
So our programmers are more likely to fix issues and/or upgrade something else with their limited time.

Second, unless it's in the films section, which is automatic, nobody is allowed to embed videos.* (Unless it's COTY, because some nut with a lot of power seems to like that at lot.) So it may be difficult to enable that just for resources and not in the forums at large.

While linking to video tutorials would be a good idea, (And is possible now, but not encouraged) and that Resources could use a major upgrade, more often than not people just search the forums for an answer/tutorial, or make a new topic and make others look up the answer for them. I myself have two tutorials that I haven't really bothered to put in Resources, because for all the effort to put them into a special page, they won't hardly be seen. And chances are nobody would even know that they are there. On the other hand I have linked to them in the forums, and they have gotten noticed.

While the idea itself is great, and wanting to improve that section is commendable, but it's just not used that much by anybody. Of course, the flip side to that is that it isn't used because the set-up is less than helpful, and there aren't that many articles, but whatever. Well, there are a lot, but most are out-dated to some degree, and they're all so chopped up into different categories that it takes a while to find what you're looking for. I'm sure if there was a major push by the members to fix, upgrade and expand that section, then something could get done, (Possibly including video tutorials) but right now, there doesn't seem to be a demand for that.

*This is because some people's internet is really slow, and embedded videos take forever to load. Following a link is just as easy on us fast internet folks, and a lot easier on the slow internet folks.

Also, I find print tutorials with pictures to generally be more professional looking and helpful. But that's just me.
And sorry if this got off-topic a bit.

Re: New idea for feature on site

i guess your right but i find the resources section to be a huge potential not being taken advantage of and if we can just fix the place up it will be great!

Re: New idea for feature on site

The resources section on old Brickfilms.com was a great thing. However, I'm not convinced that this sort of thing is sustainable/worthwhile now that the internet has changed considerably from those days. I've tried a lot of things with this site's resources section, and I always end up getting little to no user contribution to the resources section, so it never is able to grow very much. If we do get contributions, they are often from (no insult intended) children who cannot write very well, or are giving inaccurate information or advice, requiring moderators to check everything and defeating the purpose of having user-generated content.

I guess I feel as though Google will always be a better resource than whatever we could design. I'd be happy to be convinced otherwise by a great, thought-out idea.

Re: New idea for feature on site

Where do we source consistent and helpful video tutorials for brickfilming with the same level of professionalism and polish that VideoCopilot has (that made it so successful) that can't be just as easily found on Youtube or via Google?

VideoCopilot is a business that generates much of its income through providing those high quality, free tutorials. For resources on BiM, any income generated form these would fall somewhere in the range of meagre to non-existent given its niche market.

Re: New idea for feature on site

Income comes into play when people have to dedicate time to doing things. This would be entirely volunteer and to quote a dead meme, "ain't nobody got time for that". Yes, it would be nice. But for now, Youtube is that one place for videos.

Re: New idea for feature on site

Why not just start a thread? Is it just tutorials your talking about? If so start a thread and if anyone has a good tutorial they find, then they post a link to it. Every so often there could be a summery post of all the links added. Is this idea good/bad?

Re: New idea for feature on site

That seems like a decent halfway point. masterlego, you want this to happen - so why not do as Legocloniac suggested? As he said, every now and again you could update your original post with linked and descriptions to helpful videos others have posted.
