Topic: Lego pricing

So I was in Toys R Us the other day picking some of the new Castle sets
when I saw one of The Lone Ranger sets I was thinking of getting at one point, the set
with the steam train. The price on the set showed $129.99 (Canadian) then
I looked ar the Castle set that has the castle and noticed it was the same price as
the Lone Ranger set. I thought what ever, but then I looked at the number of pieces in each
set and noticed the Castle set had 996 pieces to the Ranger set that had 664 pieces in it.
I thought wow what a difference in pieces yet they want the same money?
I understand licensing and all that jazz but I have never seen a Lego Star Wars set
grossly over priced as this set.
It isnt the matter of the money to be honest but getting bang for your buck.
I work hard and want bang for my buck.
But what about rhe kids who rely on mom and dad to buy sets for them?
I have been in the Lego store and Toys R Us and have heard many a time parents
refusing to just shell out fifty bucks for a set.
And I have seen many a parent with the same mind set looking at price then pieces.
Yes I kniw Lego is the best hands down no discussion there, but I really think they have
to rethink some of the properties they take on.
Yes Star Wars and Super Heroes rock and for most part you dont feel
price gouging on their part.
I love Lego as much as the next guy but I will not be gouged at the same time

Re: Lego pricing

"Toys R Us"

90% of your problem lies right there.

And please read this, and this.

Different sets have different costs. The raw parts count is not the only consideration, there's the type of parts, the number and detailing on the minifigures, and then the retailer's own price adjusting. The Train set is supposed to be $10USD cheaper down here, so the inflation is probably just TRU getting even more greedy.

Try ordering straight from Lego, or some other dealer with the true retail price.

Re: Lego pricing

A store, that only sells toys, always expect an increase I NEVER shop at toys'r'us I go target or kmart, which even them at times can be overpriced.

I have never seen a Lego Star Wars set grossly as this set

What about Jabbas Palace just name one, of many? Which I remember at one stage it was $240! It is now going for
$189 when they put it on special it will go down as far as $169 Its unbelievable a big rip off. I own the Jabbas palace, but got it really cheap, and honestly, its nothing special at all, I only use it for parts. And the $240 was also the older Jabba palace not the newer one, not that it makes a big difference.
and several of the medium sized starwars ship go to an overpriced amount of over $100.. I have seen it and think its outrageous.

Poor kids these days..I seen it alot of times were parents just say NO its to much, or buy a smaller set.

I actually also seen some parents who buy their kids a few big sets, probably the exception of them being rich, and overly spoiled I cant seem to think of another explanation unless their buying it for some kids birthday, in that case what a lucky special kid, anyhow lucky kids.

And I agree with you, we should get bang for our buck, being 300 and something pieces apart, the lone ranger set should far be cheaper, for having that much pieces less than the other set, these days no one really thinks about the customers, but rather on themselves and the money.

Re: Lego pricing

Boohoo, you don't even live in Australia, where the price of Lego is, in many cases, inflated 100% from US pricing. Also, Licensed sets are always going to be more expensive, due to the fact that they're licensed.

Boohoo, you don't even live in Australia,

Were you referring to me or Antonio?

Re: Lego pricing

A Star Wars set that was overpriced is Palpatine's arrest.  The only thing it's good for are the Jedi masters.  And at TRU is' another $30 on top of it!  It's just a more elaboate Hulk's helicarrier, probably designed by the same guy.

Carousel: Alright no worries, thanks for your reply.

And Holdingourown, I do agree with you, if I was to get the Palpatine's arrest, which I probably won't but if I did it would be to collect the Jedi's and Palpatine himself, otherwise the set really is a rip off the Hulk Helicarrier I mean just look at this comparison come on! I'd use the parts, as there some nice parts but for the price, it's hard to want it.

Heres the photos of the 2.

Hulk Helicarrier

The Hulk helicarrier also has a ship as the other one, however the set is much smaller, and less attractive as the other, with also less minifigs, they prove similar in some aspect of design.

Possibly as stated, by the same person, however I don't know if a person can design for 2 different themes? Unless Lego owns the right to the licenses and has approved it. Don't quote me on it.

Re: Lego pricing

The reason why the Lone Ranger train is so much is because of the rail pieces.  I am pretty sure that design is in only one other set*, the temple of doom.  I could be wrong, but I think that that is the main reason.

*Actually, I just looked it up, and this style of track appears in the temple of doom, the jokers funhouse, the alien mother ship from alien conquest, and the Lone Ranger train.  My mistake.

Re: Lego pricing

I don't even think Palpatine's arrest has many interesting parts.  And like so many other Lego sets, it's full of GRAY!  The only other color that's significant is "Republic red".

Re: Lego pricing

Pricing berween the Lego store I go to and Toys R Us are the same.
If the Ranger sets train was powered I could accept the price but no.
And holding I agree with the Palpatine set.
Still in no rush to get it even with the Jedi masters.

That's really odd.  Must be how it is in Canada.  I would suggest then buying from people on bricklink or somewhere else.  You might be able to find a deal with shipping that is cheaper.

Two words, Lego Store. I have one in my city and it is great. Cheaper than generic toy stores, and it is all Lego. Still though, it is cheaper, but still expensive. Lego is getting quite money consuming these days. That's why I go for smaller sets or a large pick a brick cup, that way, if I keep getting smaller sets, then eventually I will have enough Lego bricks for high quality sets. This still, can be a problem for younger fans who want to make animations.

The only problem is that Lego Stores are only in large metro areas. I live in a fairly large metro and there is no Lego Store near me. The closest is 6 hours away.
