It is mainly used to add contrast and to give the right feel in the shot(making it look warm, cold, dark, ...)
Warmth can be added by decreasing the amount of blue color and adding some red color in. Cold color are made by decreasing amount of red color and adding some blue color. You should use some time to get confortable with these controls before trying to apply it in your film.
