Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread
^Nice police station, will be cool to see a physical version.
This is the set from my current short. I'm experimenting with a black backdrop and low-key lighting.

Not bad Cooked Cat! It reminds me of the Modular Buildings series.
Anyway, I'm not sure if these are props as such, but here are some futuristic armoured hardsuits I've built:
The one on the left is meant to be a military prototype-thing, and the one on the right a police version.
I'm thinking of using them in an upcoming project, but I don't know how easy they will be to animate.
Also, here's a model of a Dalek I built. It's a bit tall for minifig scale, and I might need to tweak the back part, but all in all I'm quite pleased with the way it turned out.
EXTERMINATE!!!
EDIT: Sorry about the big pics.
The Dalek looks nice!
That's a really clever Dalek.
I've been working out my LEGO Dalek design for eight years.
Wow, that is the best bottom casing for a Dalek I have ever seen. The top could use a bit of work, but you've nailed the hardest part. Great job!
I like the hardsuits, but the waists are a bit too thin and flimsy looking. But they'd look great after you fix that.
@Cat, while the walls and all look nice, there's no interior prop-like details. It's like a real estate showhouse. Pretty, but doesn't look like somebody could live there. Too clean and neat and not "Lived-in." Wish I could see more of the house, and could you render it next time? LDD screen shots aren't the best way of showing off a creation's beauty.
Thanks! Glad you all like it. It's quite likely that I'll be using the Dalek in one or two upcoming shorts.
@Pritchard: I'm not exactly sure how to improve the top part much more; of all the alternatives I've played around with this looks by far the best. Could you be a bit more specific on ways to improve it? And yeah, I see what you mean about the hardsuits, I'll definitely improve that part.
And since we're (sort of) on the subject Doctor Who villains, does anyone have any idea how to make a Cyberman minifig? I've been stumped on how to make one, especially a reasonably realistic-looking head. The closest heads I can think of are either this one or this one, but even those don't look particularly close, and the first is white, so it wouldn't fit at all (and I don't own either of those heads in any case). As for the ear-covering thing, I've been completely stymied. Does anyone have any ideas?
yeah its designed to fit in with the modular buildings, the first story is just a car park, the foyer is on the next, so dont worry bout the lack of 'detail' ![]()
@Cooked Cat: I really like this so far! I love the way you did the pillars on the side of the building. Is that a tiny little alley off to the right? It looks great!
@Flying Minifig:
This bucket handel is as close as I can think of for a Cyberman head, but it would require cutting and/or gluing the head and/or the handle.
As for the head, it may require a custom decal to be very accurate.
Okay, as for heads, here's what I have. I went through all heads, modified and not, in the Bricklink catalog.
Like I said, I think that bucket handle will do the best. A chrome-silver C-3PO head would be cool, and sort of accurate, but it would be expensive and I'd hate to see it modified. Other options are:
The two you listed, which aren't bad.
This one, from a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle set:
I think you'd have to get rid of the purple somehow, whether sharpie, some way of using Brasso, something.
And this one from the Collectible Minifig robot:
There's also a few other options, like the clockwork robot from the CM's, a Clone Pilot from SW (but it's white), some other variations of the Death Eater mask from HP, but I think those two up above are the closest, what do you think?
I hope this helps!

What software did you use for that set?
LeoCAD.
but, I have added to it since then....
Bit of a bump.
Working on a rooftop scene, and would like advice on the set. I like the roof itself, but the mini-scale buildings just don't look right. I'm going to have to find some bigger pieces of blue paper, but what do ya'll think?
Tiling over the studs on those two may help, as might moving the round white one from in front of the left black building, but second opinions always help with these kind of things. Thanks in advance.
And before I forget, this is not the same city as the one in the cityscape frame I released earlier.
This is your typical modern big city, and not that other thing that is both special and secret.

The building that's closest to the guy in focus looks good to me, but the others just look all crazy and out of order. I think a grid pattern would look better, maybe.
The set looks great. But I agree with you that you need bigger paper (I got some black white and blue poster board for use in my films.)
Your buildings looks fine to me, you did A nice job with all of them, that type of stuff is hard to do. I think Legocloniac477 could be right though, a nice grid pattern would help.
It looks like I need to make several more of those taller, bigger buildings, and then should lay them out in a grid, but otherwise it's great. That, and I gotta buy some blue poster-board.
Now I'm off to see how many of them things I can build with my available bricks. ![]()
Thanks guys!
EDIT:
Like this?

I think that looks good, it is just a background after all, and the viewer will be focused on what's happening in the foreground, I think it's great. ![]()
That looks much better! Great job!
To me the second version gives it a darker tone with the big black square buildings while the old one would give a lighter tone with more sky and some smaller lighter colored buildings. So I would choose which one based on the tone of the scene or recolor the black buildings to grey to make them look less menacing.
Here's a Victorian era study for my big film that I'm finally starting on (production thread coming soon).
That shelf on the right is empty on purpose.
And here's an example of what a frame might look like on the set (not my actual lighting setup, btw).
Any suggestions? I really appreciate input. ![]()
