Topic: Superman Told in a Different Way. Man of Steel! Thoughts

I am excited! Even though people think that "Superman is overpowered and boringly repetitive", I think this will change their minds.

Superman is not just some guy who flies in the sky, he is an ideal to be worth striving towards. By accepting your freakish self and utilizing it, you can become greater.

I have high hopes that this will be great and allow DC to start production on Justice League! I don't have much interest for MARVEL and when I saw how they portrayed the Mandarin in Iron Man 3 (if you know what I mean), I knew that this may be an omen that WB and DC will get back on their feet and crush MARVEL's Superheroes into the ground.

Your Thoughts?

Re: Superman Told in a Different Way. Man of Steel! Thoughts

I, for one, am worried. I love Superman, and everything he stands for. He's my #1 favorite superhero. (Though, Batman's a close 2nd) However; romance, action, a lot of in-camera effects, little 3d effects (unless they look better then flawless), and a kick-butt theme song are needed to make me like this film. (From the pre-views, I'm confident the acting will be good, and since Zack Snyder and Chris Nolan are in my top ten list of favorite directors, I have no worries about the "look" of the film itself)

Since they chose to film the movie on film (vs Digital) I'm SUPER excited. Film just has a quality that digital can't match. And a film like this can only look GREAT. However, romance, hero-brawling action, and a theme song don't seem to pop up in these ads. Thus, I'm worried...

Even the LEGO company was smart enough to use the John Williams theme for the video game, because it's SO iconic. And, unless Hans Zimmer uses the animated 1940's theme, Shirley Walker's STAS theme, or makes one himself, I'm worried that the film will be like The Amazing Spider-Man - good movie, though nothing to hum on the playground. (If you get what I'm saying)

Even The Dark Knight Trilogy had a theme, even if the most prominent was based on 2 notes. If this movie doesn't have a good musical score, then I'll lose hope in the Superman franchise, once again... Such a sad thing, since, he's THE FIRST hero, and deserves WAY more than Iron Man, Thor, or Green Lantern.

Personally, I just hope that the story is presented well and resurrects a forgotten/hidden/quiet Superman Fanbase.

Do we want to be powered by fear, anger, and vengeance (Batman) or do we want to know what positively great feats we can accomplish by understanding ourselves (Superman)?

Re: Superman Told in a Different Way. Man of Steel! Thoughts

This "Superman" film looks a LOT better than all five previous films (I hated every one), in which the only redeeming aspect was the theme song. I have no worries about the story, being that I love Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder seems to be formidable. I don't mind there being a lot of digital effects, I mean, we're talking about a supernatural out-of-this-world alien, fighting...well, the same thing. The acting looks good from what I've seen, and the quality looks good as well.

I have somewhat high hopes for this movie, even though every other Superman movie sucked IMO. Though it's hard to make a movie about Superman, because the truth is that he's just a boring super hero (One weakness, regardless of how it's implemented, is boring).

Actually, If he doesn't have the Sun's energy on standby during a hardcore, blood-shedding fight then he may be sent into a prolonged coma that sends him into a complex state of sleep. So I think you need to add another weakening factor of Superman's to your list JP. mini/wink

Re: Superman Told in a Different Way. Man of Steel! Thoughts

Well, they said the kryptonite (don't know how to spell it) won't be in this movie, since it's been overused, and they wanted something fresh.

Re: Superman Told in a Different Way. Man of Steel! Thoughts

Yeah I knew that. I also know like many others how General Zod is making a stand and for an origin story of Superman is most likely the most well fitting antagonist.

Best thing about the movie.

Marvel isn't generally one to take risks creatively, and this was the only surprise the film had to offer.

Kind of tired of the superhero movie thing. Man of Steel looks pretty self-serious, but I'm sure it'll be enjoyable in a manner similar to the Batman Begins or something like that.

How can you say that?

The original Superman (1978) film--just like the character itself--practically defined the Superhero genre, and every superhero film that followed has arguably been somehow influenced by this film.  Superman might seem somewhat dated today, but if it weren't for him, the concept of the superhero would be practically non-existent.  Also, for a film made in the 70s, it has some pretty impressive special effects--it's right up there with the original Star Wars trilogy.  I know that some of the sequels are notoriously horrible, but that doesn't make the original film bad.

I also honestly don't understand why nearly everyone seems to hate Superman Returns.  Granted, it isn't perhaps the most original, but it's still well made and has good acting, and it gives a nice modern spin to the story.

Kryptonite isn't Superman's only weakness--he also has to be under a yellow sun for his powers to be activated.  Also, since General Zod is also a Kryptonian, he has the same powers as Superman.  And, judging by the trailers, he's also brought an entire army--so it's not as though Superman is massively overpowered.

I disagree with JP. I enjoyed the 1978 film.

This, however, the new movie, doesn't look all that great. Just cause they put Snyder in charge and pull in some English guy, from off the street, who nobody's heard of before, to play the titular role doesn't neccesarily make the film "all that". I saw the teaser and I said "hmm...looks all right", and then I saw the next teaser (with a different narration) and I thought "wait, who does this? It's the same footage, just a different voice. That's real weird". And then I saw the 3-minute-long trailer and I thought "all right. I've had it with this stuff. Now they have to go and bring the military in here. I mean, Superman can save the world on his own, can't he?".

The last couple of films (except the original) did suck. And this one doesn't look too hot either. I thing the film industry needs to put their superhero stuff away. The last superhero films (both MARVEL and DC) were awful. Can't they make a non-superhero movie?

Have you seen a big-chinned boy?

Whoa there, Cavill has been acting for about 12 years now and has had roles in a few large TV shows and films. He's not exactly new to the entertainment business.

I think that should answer any beard-related questions.

But Superman 2 is immediately awesome because of General Zod. Yeah, its cheesy, but cheese is delicious in moderation and with the right wine. I'm very glad Man of Steel has made him the protagonist, since I've never liked Lex Luthor. He's just a businessman. He's not maniacal, smart, English, or completely insane. He's just a jerk who for some reason hates Superman (maybe he just isn't comfortable with a man who wears tights...)

I give props to SP2 because of the fact that Zod is in it, along with the fact the he fights three villains in all. While I still don't like it, it is at least watchable, albeit in the slightest.

Innovation does not mean that film was great in all. I realize that the 1978 film was the forefront to making superhero films mainstream and profitable, but I still think it's kind of cheesy.

'Superman Returns' is about as bad as a superhero film can be without it being named 'The Green Lantern'. The characters are annoying and horribly portrayed (Especially Luthor), the story was pretty much recycled from previous films, and there were many meaningless shots just to compare it with the older films. The only redeeming aspects of the film are its effects and music.

By the way, this is all just my opinion.

Spider-Man 3?  Batman & Robin?  Catwoman?  The Spirit?  X-Men Origins?  There are plenty of worse superhero films out there.  If you didn't like the original, you're unlikely to enjoy the modern sequel in the first place.  Aside from the general idea of the villain's plot involving land, I didn't think there wasn't all that much similarity between the originals and Superman Returns.  Also I thought that Lex Luthor was much more cunning, ruthless, and dangerous (he actually stabs Superman, as opposed to giving him a necklace and chucking him in a pool).  And, since the film takes place in the same continuity as Superman I and II, of course it's going to reference the original films.

This isn't to say I think that Superman Returns is the best movie ever, but I still think it's somewhat underrated, especially when compared to certain other superhero sequels *coughcoughIronMan2coughcough*.

By the way, this is all just my opinion.

I did realize that... mini/eh
