Re: YouTube

Just a quick question concerning copyrighted music, would music from Star Wars be considered copyrighted?  I intend to use part of the Throne Room/End Title soundtrack in a film of mine.

Of course it is copyrighted mini/smile

Re: YouTube

It's copyrighted and they usually notice. However I used Star Wars music in almost all my old videos and none of them ever got taken down. The worst was they got blocked in Germany. mini/smile

Re: YouTube

Star Wars stuff doesn't get taken down because George Lucas actually encourages the creation of fan films, you can even get the actual sound effects (or at least you used to, I don't know what Disney will do) of off and official Lucasfilm website to use if films, assuming you weren't going to make any money off of it.

Re: YouTube

I just discovered that the copyright strike I received in October for something I uploaded in 2008 stops me from getting all of these for 6 months: mini/sad

The annoying thing is that it took them 4 years to take it down (or start enforcing the protection of their content) and they could be making money if they kept it up and put ads on to it. Also I do my best not use any copyrighted material in my videos any more. Oh and it was a terrible video anyway BUT it still gives me a copyright strike!

Re: YouTube

I guess it's a lesson for all of us to avoid using copyrighted material mini/smile similar story happened to me a few years ago with my ShadowManStudios account, I was using plenty of material that wasn't mine and as a result I received a strike which back then meant I could never become a partner (I'm not sure about now, I think that you still can monetize stuff even with 2 strikes, but back in the day getting a partnership was a big achievement).

In other news my recently founded channel "Larry Simmons" has reached 80 subscribers in first 11 days of it's existence mini/smile aiming towards 100!

Re: YouTube

ShadowManStudios? I think that rings a bell... ah yes. You came second in stop motion contest I made in 2009 with this!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kv4tmSRtyoc mini/lol

Anyway if I don't receive another strike before April I believe it gets removed because it is my first one mini/smile

Cool! I remember participating in that contest! Nice to meet ya again! mini/smile And I'm still always 2nd LOL mini/lol

Re: YouTube

The infuriating thing with YouTube is that they do not listen to the Criticism/Parody clause that would normally grant us the use of Copyrighted material as long as we used it correctly. Nor do any other major companies.

In fact, YouTube don't listen to anything. Try to use a piece of music or footage where the creator has given you written permission: YOUTUBE DOES NOT COMPUTE. YOUTUBE MUST REMOVE VIDEO

I wouldn't be surprised if YouTube was like Skynet and was completely run by robots. Actually, that gives me an incredible idea for a video...

The problem with making such a video is that YouTube will probably take it down...

Perhaps even come to your home and blow it up...

That's silly, Squid.

They'd much rather go back in time and make sure the house was never built.

Re: YouTube

Just to be clear, I'm not actually going to use the music for a Star Wars film.  Well, I do realize Star Wars is copyrighted, but I wasn't sure what Lucasfilm's stance on using their material was.  There are loads of YouTube films that use SW material that haven't been taken down, so I figured they must be pretty lenient, but I wasn't sure.

By the way, what exactly does "Fair Use" cover?  It's always mentioned, but nobody seems to actually tell you what it entails.

In that case, just post it on Vimeo. mini/tongue

Ah yeah fair use is pretty confusing but essentially (as I understand it) it is the use of a reasonable amount of a copyrighted material "for criticism, commentary, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research."

It is pretty hard to find a straight answer because the law isn't very specific about stuff such as how much you can use of something copyrighted before it isn't considered fair use and also no one wants to misinform you about legal things like this because they don't want to be at risk of getting sued.

Oh and you might this useful: http://www.youtube.com/yt/copyright/fair-use.html

Re: YouTube

This doesn't relate to YouTube, but another video sharing website, Vimeo. I had nearly 30 videos on there, all being music videos. Yesterday, each video was removed for copyright infringement at the same time and my account was deleted. Is there another website that I can use that this won't be an issue? I haven't uploaded to YouTube for the same reason.

edit: just tried uploading 2 of my music videos to dailymotion, both rejected for copyright infringement.

Re: YouTube

Wow, Vimeo is doing that too? (Wait, were the music videos your own creation, or were they official? Because Vimeo removes stuff that is not your own creation.)

The songs were not my own creation, but I made the videos to accompany the songs, which were just a compilation of movie clips that I felt matched the song well.

Re: YouTube

Oh, I can understand why Vimeo didn't like that, then. In their guidelines:

You must own or hold all necessary rights (copyrights, etc.) to your video.

Usually the music is not an issue, as there are plenty of videos using copyrighted music.
Have you actually tried posting these on Youtube? There are so many tribute films and other things created by editing together existing footage, and I don't know how often they get removed.
