Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

Lucasarts (I believe) is owned by lucasfilms, making that also property of Disney.
Here it is:
(part of) The Press Release:

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, including its massively popular and “evergreen” Star Wars franchise and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio post production. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco, operates under the names Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, and the present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.

Nope, since, y'know, that's not going to happen and stuff.

A character from Twilight played by the inimitable Michael Sheen.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

Funniest guy on the planet at the moment, Michael Sheen deserves an honorable oscar for that performance

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

Oh I see! (Sorry I refuse to watch Twilight) I saw him in the Bad Lip Reading Video.

Good news.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

Fantastic news actually

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

I was disappointed, although they could've done much worse of course. J.J. Abrams has historically not been one for subtlety in his direction and his last three movies (Star Trek, Super 8, Star Trek Into Darkness) all look very similarly stylized despite two different cinematographers working on them.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

I think Star Wars needs stylisation. Despite creating two prolific franchises, George Lucas cannot be called an auteur - unless you count the terrible framing in the prequels (in the originals, the characters were in physical locations where the camera can get stuck in. In the prequels, the characters were in front of backdrops and thus the camera had to stand back or else it would bump into the green cloth)

Whilst I've said my (incredibly over-long, as usual) piece on why I think these sequels are more unnecessary and damaging to the overall story than a chapter in Lord of the Rings where we see Saruman wondering which white robe he will wear today - I'd rather we had lens flares and sharp lighting than no distinctive visual style whatsoever. At least it will make the films slightly less mediocre (which, as I've said, is the only thing Star Wars can hope to be now).

Speaking of - I wonder if Abrams will actually use real things occasionally, rather than just plonking the actors in the middle of a giant green room and letting computers do all the work.

Star Trek had a bunch of real props and real sets. Probably more than the prequels did.
Most of the CGI seemed to be used for spaceships and stuff, in which case CGI is the best option.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

George Lucas isn't an auteur, but that has more to do with his lack of total control over his films. He didn't even write or direct Empire or Jedi. I suppose his approach with the prequels was arguably auteur. I'm fine with style, I just mean that something more congruent to the original trilogy would be my preference, instead of something styled similarly to Star Trek and Super 8. J.J. kind of shoots everything like a television show, with lots of shaky camera, handheld, not-so-steady steadycam, and the like. It looks a little amateurish or cheap at times, and definitely messy, as opposed to the somewhat more composed, refined look of the original trilogy.

I do admire that J.J. Abrams uses lots of real locations instead of relying on sets and greenscreen all the time. He did take this too far in Star Trek, however, using a Budweiser plant as the engineering section of the Enterprise. Terrible decision, imo.

As long as neither universes cross paths, I'm cool with it.  It's a movie.  Let's stop knocking it off it's pedestal and just watch.  Or don't.  Whatever.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

Oh, we'll all watch it. Even if the trailer looks awful and the film looks awful. Because we are sheep gnawing on the grass of despair.

(Apparently the film is coming out 2015. So I guess the 3D re-releases are no longer happening. This is a shame, as I was actually looking forward to seeing the original trilogy in the cinema - albeit in 2.5D. It was the only time I actually wanted people to see The Phantom Menace just so that it could make enough money to ensure Lucas re-releases the rest. Still, I suppose actually taking the effort to make something new - even if it does turn out to be horrid - is better than dragging something kicking and screaming that's already been exploited enough)

So according to this they rumor to get the old cast back?
Would be exciting imo.

Re: DISNEY BOUGHT LUCASFILMS AND STAR WARS EPISODE VII!

So there will be Star Wars 7, 8,9 + a movie about Yoda, a movie about Han Solo and a movie about Boba Fett.

Ugh...  mini/confused  please bring George back!
