Re: Frame from Your Upcoming Film

The lighting in that frame looks awkward to me. I'm not sure how to improve it, but maybe try putting the lamp more on top of the set, so it doesn't look like it's coming from the sides? Or maybe bumping the exposure down a little bit? That shot has some nice framing, but I feel the lighting kind of ruins it.

Re: Frame from Your Upcoming Film

Thanks for the tip mini/smile Because my webcam (Logitech Orbit AF) adjusts lighting on its own, I didn't use a lamp for this shot.  My webcam can also adjust brightness, contrast, and colour intensity, so it might be something to do with the settings which I chose.

Re: Frame from Your Upcoming Film

So you're going to have light flicker if you let it automatically adjust to lighting and such.

Re: Frame from Your Upcoming Film

Yeah, I had a light flicker problem a while ago but I found a setting that allows you to manually adjust some aspects of the lighting while the webcam automatically adjusts the brightness.  I usually animate in the afternoon, so it's pretty bright anyway.

That's probably where a lot of your light flicker problem comes from. You absolutely cannot have any natural light from the sun coming down on your set. Because the sun gradually moves, you'll slowly see the light change as the scene progresses.

Not to mention clouds moving in front of the sun; that makes the light change even faster.

Re: Frame from Your Upcoming Film

I try to minimize natural light on the set as much as possible, but my studio has two walls which are made entirely of glass.

Closing the blinds doesn't usually make much of a difference.  Would animating at night be better?  If so, what kind of lamps should I use?

(I can also change some of the lighting in post production)

YES. DESK LAMPS.

Ok, thanks mini/smile

Re: Frame from Your Upcoming Film

That pic (and post) should probably go in the "Pictures of your studio" thread.
This thread is for final frames lifted from an upcoming movie. mini/wink

I would close the blinds for sure, animate at night as much as possible, and start looking for some thick black curtains.

Re: Frame from Your Upcoming Film

Sounds good!

Re: Frame from Your Upcoming Film

Totally agree with Pritchard. If you have the opportunity to, move your set to a place without glass walls.

Re: Frame from Your Upcoming Film

I tried animating at night and worked out really well.

Re: Frame from Your Upcoming Film

Thanks for the great advice, everyone mini/bigsmile   I redid that scene at night (using a desk lamp) and it turned out much better, with consistent lighting and no flicker.

(the background is a blue screen)

Re: Frame from Your Upcoming Film

A lot better! I like the new angle, it's kinda "in-your-face" and is a great pick for a setup like that.
The "Blue screen" does look awful purple-y though...

Re: Frame from Your Upcoming Film

Thanks!  One of the only drawbacks of animating at night is that the lighting makes the blue screen look purple.  It's okay, this scene takes place in the evening anyway mini/smile

Re: Frame from Your Upcoming Film

Finally getting around to doing a full "Misconception" film?
If so, could you please keep it clean? Thanks.

On to the frame itself, the lighting doesn't seem right. There's that one light source, which casts long, odd looking shadows and then has only the one spot on the far right where the bookshelf is lit well. And then the tablet that is glowing but not lighting up the girl's face at all.

The room looks very plain and empty with just the one piece of furniture, I'd suggest at least adding a small table beside it. The objects on the floor seem out-of-place. If the person is slop enough to leave those on the floor, then there would be more things lying around, but if she is neat-freak enough to totally clean the rest of the floor, then why did she leave those there? If you want to kill two birds with one stone, you should add a table and set the items on it.

Re: Frame from Your Upcoming Film

No, when has one's sensitivity to content stopped me from making what I want, the lighting is right if it's coming from another room, noted on the tablet, it's not her room and the objects are meant to imply the book she's reading.

For example, this one lacks subtly.

And since when does this thread require the full scrutiny of the National Society of Film Critics?  I expect it in a WIP thread, not this thread.

Re: Frame from Your Upcoming Film

Umm I do believe this thread is to post frames so that people can critique you. To make it better.
