Topic: New PC

Soooooooo, I'm building up a new PC for to do all of my work (and gaming) on.

I'll be putting about $1,000 into it, and I was wondering what components I should get.

I already know I'm going with an Intel i7 CPU, a NvIDIA GTX 400 or 600 series GPU, and a dual-graphics card capable motherboard.

Anyone have experience in this area?

Re: New PC

I have a pc similar to what you're describing. BTW you can save some cash by getting the new Windows 8 consumer preview for FREE! A Microsoft employee I know says Microsoft might make it so you can use it FOREVER! Anyways I'll post the specs for you by Monday.

No, don't do this. They confirmed that the trial version of 8 isn't stable enough to work on.

Re: New PC

I've heard people saying the consumer preview crashes at least a couple of times of day either wait for the full release of windows 8 or get win 7 which is a perfectly good OS

Re: New PC

I'll be sticking with 7.
My dad can get 7Ultimate at an educator's discount, for $45.

Re: New PC

If you are going to be getting 32 GB of ram, you'll want to have a better processor or dual processors. I'd recommend investing in a motherboard that could take 2 i7s or 1 or 2  Intel Xeon precessors. Xeons have 6 cores each and i7s have 4 cores. You could take advantage of all that ram if you had dual processors.

Re: New PC

You, of course, need an internet connection network. Without it, you won't have internet.

Re: New PC

Please do NOT buy a dell....EVER! They always come with usb 1.1 ports, not 2.0 and they much slower than other brands, even with the same hardware. It really depends on you though.

Re: New PC

If you're getting 32 GB, might I suggest a Dell Precision T5400.  Dual processors, supports up to 32 GB.  They sell cheap on ebay, if you time it right.  I'm building two off of two Precision 490 cases.  Of course, two Xeon processors can be equivalent to one i7 with hyperthreading so buyer's pick.

Just out of curiosity, what is your "work"?   Blender rendering?  If it's just Blender, have you considered using renderfarm.fi? The processing power of thousands of blender users in the palm of your hand for free.

And what matters more?  USB or processing power.

Re: New PC

Well, I'm going to talk to an IT guy at my school before I do anything.
As for the work, it would consist mostly of Adobe applications, Blender and MAYA.
There will also be some occasional gaming.

Re: New PC

Where are you getting a computer with 32GB and an i7 for $1000? And make sure your getting a relatively large hard-drive.

Re: New PC

I'm not buying a computer, I'm buying components and building one.
I did a quick calculation on the price, and it will come out at about $800, with about $100 of extra bits 'n bobs like cables and such.
