Topic: New Film Directory Format

I've heard about things such as revamping the film directory and scrapping the review panel and I recently got an idea that I would like to suggest. Instead of having appointed staff members review films, what if we only had user-generated reviews instead? So instead of getting one review on the page for a film, we could have a thread right under the director's comment section where regular members could post a written review. There would also be a rating system for the user-created reviews, where higher rated reviews float to the top and the reviews that are a single sentence saying something like "OMG BEST LEGO MOVEE EVAH <3" sink to the bottom. The format would be a lot like the review system Netflix is currently using.

I'm suggesting this partially because I liked having the Recommended Films feature and if we lift the burden of having to write a review off of a panel member, it could be more likely that we could bring back the Recommended Films. Now, I'm not requesting that we bring back the Recommended Films, because that would probably never happen. What I am asking is if the staff would consider implementing a reviewing system that has already been proven to be effective (see Netflix) and get the community more involved with reviewing films.

Re: New Film Directory Format

This isn't unlike something BertL had plans for a while back, which involved integrating the "releases" thread posts into the film directory page. I don't think doing something like that would be a bad idea, if one of our programmers can find time to do it.

Personally, I do plan to try to get new reviews going this summer (via a blog that highlights good films) but I haven't had time to manage it and get it off the ground lately due to school.

Re: New Film Directory Format

I talked about this with BertL earlier today, actually. But my proposal is different from his because instead of mixing the "Releases" forum with film directory, there would be two separate threads. Another option is that my proposed system could result in streamlining the forums even further by completely remove the "releases" forum, as it would be a little redundant when the directory is running smoothly.

Re: New Film Directory Format

Yeah -- I think that's basically what Bert had in mind. The releases forum would just redirect you to the film pages when you click the link to a given thread.

Re: New Film Directory Format

But that way there's no potential for 'discussion' of a brickfilm...

Re: New Film Directory Format

I think Bert and my thought was the discussion would just be migrated over to the film page. I suppose it's true this isn't quite the same thing as just having reviews.

I honestly don't think very highly of public user-generated reviews on this site. I think that most films don't get a review worth highlighting, because most of the people here are young, novice filmmakers who don't really have the experience or skill set necessary to write good reviews. Writing reviews isn't a strong spot for me, either. I suppose this makes me skeptical about the value of highlighting user reviews in a more specific way than just moving the forum discussion over to the film page.

Re: New Film Directory Format

I'll add my two cents and say that when I got a staff review on my film (2 years ago now, wow, time flies mini/eek ), it was so well written it was refreshing, even though it didn't really say anything new. I would also have doubts about users being able to show that type of quality.

Re: New Film Directory Format

I really miss getting reviews. When I got my first film reviewed and it got a recommended rating it really made my day. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with this summer.

Re: New Film Directory Format

While the idea seems good on the surface, I think I'm in agreement with JamesW on this one. I've never had a film reviewed yet on here, but I'd enjoy one of the staff reviews rather than a bunch of user generated opinions.

The review your likely to see would be written either by a long time member who knows what they're saying, or by a (former) reviewer.

Oh yes, I know that's how it currently is and I'd be fine to keep it that way. I think it's best. That is what I was trying to say.
