Topic: Run Run Run

Here is an animation I made to test out and practice Running. It's a little more than a generic run cycle video. Let me know your thoughts and opinions! Thanks so much! (it has a frame by frame breakdown later on in the video.) Also watch in HD.

Re: Run Run Run

Good.  The only thing is I think the minifig needs to be bent forward some more.

Yep, definitely more forward lean...

Re: Run Run Run

I think I agree with you all. The one difficulty I encountered when animating this was the point when the mini figure is in between studs, not actually connected to them at all. I couldn't seem to get the figure to be leaning forward slightly and still balanced. I would always have to move him to a more upright position like is seen in this video. Anyone have any suggestions for me on how to fix this?

Re: Run Run Run

Use clay that doesn't dry out.  Make sure the camera can't see it.

Re: Run Run Run

Clay can get quite annoying and cumbersome to animate. I'm almost certain that most people don't use clay to animate running, any other suggestions? How do you do it? Thanks!

Re: Run Run Run

Sticky tack works for me. I use it a lot.

Oh, I should have specified.  The clay goes on the minifig's foot and helps it stand upright on the baseplate.  Clay that stays moist is sticky, it works well as an adhesive.
Sorry for not being clear enough.

Oh okay that makes a little more sense. I may have to run some tests on this to make sure it doesn't go too slow. If I were to put some clay on the figure's foot would it stay and work for entire shot without having to replace the clay you think? Thanks for the info and no problem!

Re: Run Run Run

Well, you only use the clay when you need it.  The clay is supposed to be unseen by the camera, anyway.

Non-drying clay always stays moist, and therefore is always sticky.

Re: Run Run Run

I'm just wanting to make sure I won't have to keep on taking clay on and off the character's foot, as this would slow down animating quite a bit. If I were to leave the clay on the character's feet throughout, as he steps onto a stud completely, the clay would get smashed inside the foot and I'd have to keep on fixing it. Perhaps I'm wanting this too easy though. Haha mini/smile I'll have to run some tests to figure out what the best way to do this is. Thanks for the input!

Re: Run Run Run

I've experimented with running a tad bit, and for me it just works to kinda press the minifig down onto the baseplate. This makes his legs at the same relative angle from the ground, and it pushes the ends of his feet against the studs, which adds stability. It is indeed still a problem however, and I'd be interested in hearing how using clay works for you mini/smile

Re: Run Run Run

Sure thing! I may run some tests later this evening when I'm back at the house, and if so I'll post the results tomorrow. We shall see if I have time. mini/smile

Re: Run Run Run

Thanks, and do you mean the sections where he is rounding the corners of the building? If so he is supposed to be "sliding" around the corners and turning. Thanks for the input though, having him lean forward a bit might solve that.

Re: Run Run Run

actually, i meant when he runs, when you look close, he looks like hes sliding a bit every step.

but it is very good, and i like when he slid around corners
