I believe its for Windows only. Although, I did see they had Word for the Mac. Maybe they'll have Notepad for the Mac.

There are different types of code that will work in unison with others. You should start by learning HTML. http://www.w3schools.com/ Is a good resource, however the more complex tutorials contain some errors according to http://w3fools.com/.

I myself use http://www.000webhost.com which gives a lot of freedom and has support for all of the above.
