And doing it by hand in GIMP is quicker?
Perhaps it's the rendering time required to calculate and render DOF? Assuming they're using full raytracing.
This is exactly it, if there's one thing I have learned while messing around with this 3d modeling is only render what you absolutely have to render: render what changes from frame to frame. So if I only have to render the mini-fig each frame and only render the back ground with DOF in post production I can perhaps save rendering time ![]()
I don't really see the point, though. If the computer can do the DOF by its self, let it and go do something else productive in the meantime. Also, whatever way you're doing it (like this, maybe? http://gimpguru.org/tutorials/simulateddof/) might create some weird "focus flicker" when in motion; looking at the image in the tutorial, there's a weird outline around the foreground subject (the kid) which I could see being rather annoying in motion.
Also, I've learned in various places that sometimes taking a little time to focus on small details can really have a big impact on the whole picture, so your "don't render what you don't absolutely have to" comment seems a little presumptuous to me, even if in some cases you may be correct.
Guys, I did the fake DoF in Gimp because I can't seem to get it to work in Blender. I was messing around in Gimp and said, "Ooh, that looks like DoF," so I made a quick render and depth-of-fielded it.
...can simulate DOF without full raytracing.
Yeah, it is my understanding that as of current Blender Cycles's DOF has to be raytraced and cannot be done in post production... unless someone knows otherwise?
@Rusty: Couldn't get DOF to work? Are you using Blender Internal, Cycles, or another render engine? Perhaps I can be some assistance ![]()
DOF requires some messing with the Node Editor. Read up on that.

Blender internal. I know how to do it, I watched several YouTube videos, but I must be doing something wrong.
If you wanted, you could post your .blend file online and one of us could review it. I know I'd be happy to help ![]()
Does anyone know how to export an animation from Blender in a Qucktime format?
I know how to export it as a raw AVI file, but not Quicktime.
EDIT: Tiny question: in Blender, how do you make it so that a text object is editable in edit mode like any other mesh? When I go into edit mode, I want to be able to edit the vertices, not the words.

I started working on new animations, this time it's knights. I can't decide yet which factions to use, so here is a test render with some modern ones and the classics and some parts waiting for texturing...
I modeled all the parts myself, most based on LDD parts, but remodeled to make them look more realistic and rounder.

Great! The bottom picture looks very realistic.
Just one thing, though. The minifig hands don't look right. It looks like the opening needs to be wider and the bottom more curved.
Are you sure they arent real!!! Great job the look amazing
Wowza, those look great!
@ mali - How long did those pictures take to render?

Thanks everyone
@ Wingman_mn - I'm not sure, they took around 20-30 minutes, but I was doing other things on the computer at the time and it's a 4 year old q6600.. There are no lights, it's a HDRI setup.
@ minifig051 - I think you're right about the hands, thanks for noticing that.
@ Fantasyfilmer - haha, yeah, here's a screenshot from max

What's going on with Blender 2.49? The black box shows this message every time I open it:
Compiled with Python version 2.5.2.
' import site' failed; use -v for traceback
Checking for installed Python... No installed Python found.
Only built-in modules are available. Some scripts may not run.
Continuing happily.
What's wrong? The Ldraw import script doesn't work, and I think it's because of whatever this is saying.
