Our Lego Batman Adventure

youtube video

This film was made by my son and I for the Lego Super Heroes Contest.

UPDATE: 12/2

I put these in a new post in the thread, but I don't think anyone was finding it...

Parts 2a, 2b and 3 are up on youtube.   Here are the links:
Part 1

Part 2
http://youtu.be/zkwtO1h2U5Y

http://youtu.be/zraJHLhgDK4

Part 3
http://youtu.be/yRHsivTW5CU

There are 2 part 3's on youtube- one is the version I submitted literally 1/2 an hour before the deadline.   The other version (called "3 final") is the product of about 3 more hours of work passed the submission deadline.  Some of the timing was cleaned up and room tone was added to all of the scenes.

Let me know what you think!

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

Hello.

My wife and I have been Lego fans for 20 years.   I made my first brick film in 2003, which was a 2 minute long music video for a Moxy Fruvous song.   In 2004 I did a shot-for-shot remake of the first indiana jones movie.  (all 116 minutes!)  I have never shared those movies because I don't own the rights to the sound tracks.   In late 2004 my son was born and I was banned from making new movies.  However, my son is now 7, and when he heard about the lego superhero contest he asked at dinner: "Can we enter, Dad?"   I smiled at my wife and said "Of course, we can!"

We wrote the script for this together in early August and he helped me build sets during the days and I have been filming about 2 - 4 hours a night every night after the kids are asleep.   I have about 300 hours of work in this film so far.

I shot the footage on a sony dv camera and I did my initial editing in Imovie 2, but finished with final cut pro.

The voice acting was done by students that attend the high school where I teach.

I am about a third of the way through "part 2" of this movie-  I bought a new mic and Motion 5 to try to up the overall quality of my work.  I am hoping to finish part 2 before November 15th.

Please let me know what you think of my work!

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

it's some where between 'Ok' and 'Good'
it would be much better if a little smother and some effects where added.
other wise, not to bad...
and welcome to BiM

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

I like that you are doing this as a family
your animation was a little slow you might want to try doing a higher Frame rate. (Fifteen Frames per Second is the standard around here)
As Alfa Animations aid some effects would be nice.
you can look here for some free software but merely using a flashlight to brighten the scene when a gun fires is usily good enough
keep going, I cant wait to see the next part. mini/smile

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

Thanks for the feedback.  I guess I'm a bit of a lego puritan.  I don't like how the overlay explosions and gun shots look in the films I've seen.   I like building the explosions out of bricks (like I did when they blew the hole in the wall).   I tried using translucent bricks on the gun barrels  in one frame on the gun shots, but I didn't like that either.   That being said, in the second half of the movie I want to do some batarang throws and some gymnastic fight scenes, so I am trying to learn how to do chroma keying.  I am averaging around 10 frames per second.  For some shots, like the monitors turning on or cars accelerating, I speed up the rate.

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

Props and lightning and minifigs are good, but you should set the FPS higher. Nice video, and long. I like it. mini/smile Really!

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

That was actually fairly good. I think this was very well made and creative, especially since this appears to be your first brickfilm.

One way to improve the animation in this, however, would be to take more inbetween pictures of the characters, so it gives off more of an illusion of really moving, and also bumping up the frames per second to maybe 15 or 24. Just a suggestion, I think it might help you.

Good work, I hope to see more from you guys in the future! mini/smile

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

I wasn't bad, like they said the frame-rate could go up a little.
But I'll be surprised if you don't win something, the story is much more in-depth than most of the other entries.
And I liked the extra details from the comics: Jason's uniform, Oracle and her Batgirl uniform, the giant penny and playing card, and Black Canary.Overall it seemed very well thought through. I enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to the next part.

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

Thanks for the feedback!

I am only 3 minutes into Part 2 of my movie.   I will try to increase my frame rate for the rest of what I film for this installment.   Pritchard- I'm glad you noticed all the details I added to the cave.   Building the penny and the card was really challenging.  I put a lot of time into my sets.  The 40 cm tall batman in the opening took me 6 hours to make, but it is only on film for about 7 seconds...

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

Hey bud good job on your first video. I can appreciate where you are coming from with your son. I have always liked Lego but it was my son who got me into it big time and I have not looked back since. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.;)

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

I submitted this video 23 days ago, and just learned two days ago that Warner Brothers liked the movie butdid not accept the video because they though the 7 guards that die in the lobby of Arkham was too violent.   (There was no blood or anything.)   To fix my submission, I deleted the machine gun sounds from the existing audio in the scene and used a silenced pistol sound instead and had my voice actors redo their lines to imply that they were shooting tranquilizer darts.   I think the original gun shots are more "in character" for Scarecrow and Harley, but oh, well.

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

Ok here's my review on it......

Animation: 3/5
Lighting: 2/5
VFX: 3/5
Sound: 3 1/2
Film quality: 4
Story: 3

For your first video you did a very good job! mini/smile you should probably consider using a higher framerate, reducing light flicker, and not bumping your camera when you film. In the opening part, when the bats fly by, I would've made a sky background or something instead of using the wall.

OVERALL:    4/10

I don't mean to be rude..... I'm just giving my review. mini/smile

Thanks!

I'm working on getting my studio back up and running, so stay posted...

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

I can't watch the edited one. It says that:
"This video contains content from WMG, who has blocked it on copyright grounds.
Sorry about that."
But the non-edited one is still fine.
Did you use a copyrighted sound for the guns?

EDIT:
Both "Part I" and "Part one" have the above message.
Although "Part 1" doesn't.
And the "WMG" is This.
So, did you change the music score? Because WMG doesn't have sound effects.

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

Well, he used the Batman theme in both, so maybe WMG didn't notice the first video but noticed the edited one.

Not literally dead, just no longer interested in Lego or animation.

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

Yeah, but most of the other entrys into the contest used some sort of Batman music, one even did TDKR teaser in lego (With the real audio), and two did the 1960's theme in lego.

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

Well, I decided just now to watch this, and I have to agree with JK. This wasn't bad at all.
Sure, the animation was choppy, but it has style. While watching it I didn't care how low the framerate was, I was actually fascinated by how some animation tricks worked so well (like the dressing part, or the pedals, or even the explosion). It worked really well. And the plot sounds like part of something bigger, it makes me curious, it looks well developed and way more complicated than the average batman brickfilm we usually find on youtube.
Sets were another impressive part of this movie, very realistic, and definitely gave the impression of being in a real lego world (even if some times I spotted the end of the set, didn't care about it).
I don't see why Anteater gave story a 3/10 rating, and lighting wasn't that bad either. I find the solution to your lighting problems interesting: it is impossible to make a real Batman sign on the sky, but you managed to make it look real, no matter how it was clearly printed in the blanket or whatever that thing was, it looked real enough to me.
The sound at times was not realistic, and I could hear you used only one sound track, which leads me to the question: do you use WMM? If so, I'd suggest changing editing software. You'll see having more tracks will help, you won't have to stop a sound effect to put in a dialogue. On another note, the voice acting was good and convincing.
Also, another aspect of the movie that helped the animation look good was the cinematography. It was excellent in some parts, and interesting. In some parts it felt like a real movie (although sound didn't help much in that). Well, I'm not going to say it's one of the best I've seen in brickfilms, but it's good enough to me to say that it's better than in most of the brickfilms I see nowdays.
And actually I think the animation here is way more fashinating than the usual "good 15 fps standard" animation. It's fashinating because even at a slower framerate it really works, to the point that I don't care how theorically bad or unrealistic it should be considered, kinda like Through the Hatch, which is one of my favourite brickfilms, that has choppy-looking animation (it's great choppy-looking animation).
I'll probably the only one here to say that the animation here is absolutely perfect and flawless, as in the previously mentioned film, because I refuse to think the animation is choppy/too slow.
But well, that's just my opinion. I can't wait to see the second part.
Congratulation on making this, you definitely deserve to win something for that contest. 4/5

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

its always good to see a brickfilm thats not a comedy "cough Forrestfire" cough" any way the storys really good the set design is AMAZING the animations is ok but the rest make up for that mini/bigsmile

Re: Our Lego Batman Adventure

Sorry I have not posted in awhile-  I've been working on finishing this film.

First of all-  I am glad its over.   My son and I were originally going to make a 10 minute movie, but we kept adding stuff to it.  Every time he said "wouldn't it be cool if..."  I said "yes!!"    The final movie is about 50 minutes long.  Part 1 is 15 minutes and part 3 is 15 minutes, but part 2 is 20 minutes long- I uploaded it to youtube in 2 parts.  I was able to finish part 1 and part 3 in time for the contest, but just finished part 2 two nights ago.   Lots of cool things happen in part 2, but the main features of the story happen in 1 & 3, so I made sure I finished those on time.   I worked on this movie for 118 straight nights.   Not true- I took 3 nights off to grade AP physics homework assignments... (99% of the work was done between 8:30 PM and 1:30 AM each night).  About 700 hours in total.   My students recorded bout 3 hours worth of takes of their lines.  There are a couple parts where it seems like the sound quality changes- it is due to the fact that pick ups were done days later in most cases.  Sorry.

Parts 2a, 2b and 3 are up on youtube.   Here are the links:

Part 3

There are 2 part 3's on youtube- one is the version I submitted literally 1/2 an hour before the deadline.   The other version (called "3 final") is the product of about 3 more hours of work passed the submission deadline.  Some of the timing was cleaned up and room tone was added to all of the scenes.

Thanks to everyone for the mostly kind comments about my movie.   I know my frame rate is low by the standards at this site, but I don't by any means think it is "unwatchable."   We built 43 different sets for this film and I think most of them are really well done.  My son's best contribution was  Nightwing's apartment.  I think it turned out great.

At any rate,  I hope you check out the other parts of the film and let me know what you think.
