Re: The CGI Thread

Here's a preliminary rendering of a submarine I'm working on for Binding Brick.

It's not done, mind you.

Re: The CGI Thread

That color looks really dark. Make sure if you're using a black color, it's not pure black; no real-life objects are "pure black."

Re: The CGI Thread

It's not actually black, there's just not any lights underneath.
The bottom's the same color as the top.

Re: The CGI Thread

Hi guys, I hope I'm in the right place, I'm new here... mini/smile

I recently did some 3d animation tests for my upcoming videos. You can see them on my youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/mali22?blend=22&ob=5

I'm also working on a large scene involving the classic pirates theme. That one won't include any character animations because it just got too huge to do that, but I will make a video with an animated camera fly-through.

Pretty much everything was done by myself. I did use some LDraw pieces, but I heavily modified them or remodeled from scratch as I wanted to make them look more convincing and real. I used 3ds max for everything which I also use for my work (architectural visualizations).

I'm attaching a little teaser image and a viewport screenshot from max (many more things were added after), hope you guys will like it so far.

Thanks for looking mini/bigsmile

Re: The CGI Thread

These look very nice. I wish I could work with 3D. It would prove to be quite fun I imagine.

Re: The CGI Thread

Looks great!
I also have a question:
Do you know if the student edition of 3Ds MAX 2012 has a watermark on it's renders?

I'm pretty sure it does.

Grrr.
Does the 2011 version have one?

Re: The CGI Thread

most likely yes, but I've never tried it myself.

However, there may be a watermark on output that indicates the design was created using an Educational copy and was not purchased for legal Commercial use.

That is the most realistic looking LEGO CGI scene my eyes have witnessed. I am very impressed, great job, sir!

Re: The CGI Thread

Hey Mali,
That scene you rendered turned out quite nice as the best cgi lego scene I've seen. A great touch to add to this (if you're making an actual scene from the shot) is a defocus. It's quite simple in blender. Sorry if you already have a defocus on the scene and you're like, "Mason, whatch'ya talkin' 'bout [willis]? There is a defocus". If there is, i recommend lowering the cg 'f-stop' so the out of focus stuff more blurred.

Re: The CGI Thread

Thanks Juggernaut and Mason mini/bigsmile

@Mason, yes, there is already a bit of defocus there, but I didn't want to go too crazy with it. I'll see about pronouncing it more if it makes everything look better. I did it in post work, though, as it would take a lot more time to render if I did it in max. It's less accurate, but it's much faster and more flexible if I want to change it.

no, it doesn't.  i'm learning the student version of 3ds max.  it's great because it's exactly the same thing as the full version, but completely free

Re: The CGI Thread

Good.
Also, I've been having trouble actually downloading the student edition.
What happens is, when it's 99% complete, it stops.
The file is 3.09GB, when i'ts supposed to be 3.1GB.
Any thoughts?

Re: The CGI Thread

I had the exact same problem.  even after switching browsers and restarting my computer, it still didn't work, so i just grabbed the 2010 edition.
