Re: The Festival of Souls 2! Discussion Topic

I think that the animator should chose whether they want comedy or not. I think that being as lego is a toy I would be more keen on adding a bit of comedy to mine.

Films which contain both comedy and horror are often really good. Anyone here seen Peter Jackson's 'The Frighteners'? That was comedy through most part, but towards the end it was actually quite scary.
But I think the choice should be given to the director. I like both comedic horror and actual horror as much, they both have their pros and cons. I though, in general, like to have some humour in films which are made with smiling little plastic people, but thats just me. I have never seen a film made with lego thats made me even jump.

I do however, really like horror stuff. But lego isn't the right thing for me to do horror with, thats just my opinion. I would love to see a film which has 80% suspense and frights but 20% jokes too, because I don't always think that 100% horror works. But I don't think 100% comedy would work either. The film makers got to find the right balance. A film which is a bit jumpy, but also a bit funny at times.

I am hoping to enter this though, but I'm still getting used to Dragon so we'll see.

But comedy simply ruins the point, and as Legogod said, the decision has been made. EDIT: MPfisto put it rather well.

Right you are:

I, personally, don't care about one or two jokes as long as it does not detract the movie from his main purpose, and as long as the jokes aren't more important than the scary parts.

Maybe I didn't explain that clear enough. Horrors great, so is comedy, but I think that these films should contain more horror than humour, but at the same time I don't think it should be all horror from start to finish unless someone does it well. I like films with little/no humour and loads of horror, like 'Alien'. But I think lego films seem to work better if they have a few gags. But have the gags in the un scary scenes.

Like have a few gags before some friends go into a haunted house, before any scary scenes comes. Then, after that have the whole thing scary when they go into the haunted house, so the humour doesn't ruin the scary scenes. Terrible example I know, but I think that the majority should be scary, not let the humour take over. I don't think I explained that well enough in my first post.

So I say humour which doesn't distract from the horror. Like having a big long tense bit where somethings about to run round the corner and after all that it turns out to be something silly. Thats not what I mean, that ruins the horror bits.
I'm glad the theme has been decided, I'll start to think of some horror.

Re: The Festival of Souls 2! Discussion Topic

Maybe it works better for your style and whatnot, but that's the contest, and the point is to try. Decision's been made anyway, as Legogod said:

legogod wrote:

The gist of some members: "Please! Just five jokes! No, three! There has to be some-I'm incapable of making something without jokes. How about one big joke-is that OKAY?"

I like how this discussion is going-but the main idea has been addressed. Serious horror it is. There is always a bit of leeway concerning this rule-it isn't a "no comedy" ruling. Horror should take the forefront while comedy grabs a seat. It might get up once or twice to go to the bathroom, but comedy should stay in that seat. Shock us, bewilder us, scare us- that's the main point-and do it with bricks. Please monitor yourselves should you plan to enter. We're certainly not going to field every "Is this okay, or is it too much comedy?" question that comes through.

I'm also open to more prizes/ achievements. It looks right now like it would sit at three. I don't know how much Brickarms is donating-but I've thought of some trophy ideas and perhaps a Lego prize.

Happy day.
Jared

If someone wants to put humour he just put it. Lego or not, it's the director who chooses. It is allowed, but in the way you say it it looks like you want it to be obligatory. Maybe I misunderstood your post, if that's the case, I'm sorry.
The fact that lego works better with comedy is quite true, but that doesn't mean one can't make a 0% comedy movie that work. It depends on the story and on how well the movie is directed.
I think that we can't decide what's our favourite genre to do until we tried out all of them: I'm saying this because some said "I prefer doing comedy", and they probably never tried something different. This contest could be an excuse to try other things. Although we still don't know the theme, the movie doesn't necessary need a monster, or blood, so you can also try different types of horror (if you want).

And you can't like, prevent someone from making a schmalarious film, and you can't prevent them from winning if their film also is a really well done horror film.

Re: The Festival of Souls 2! Discussion Topic

Onion, I think you should just have, "Best horror film" and then you should just have three to five prizes just for that one category.

Re: The Festival of Souls 2! Discussion Topic

I would appreciate for once if people took note of my posts.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.
I think after all that's been said it's unanimous that comedy should be ruled off. I kinda figured this would be the case, and think it's probably for the best. Unless anyone is strongly against it, and has a good case, I think it's safe to mark this question off now.

I said that on the FIRST PAGE.

The effect you've put on that banner is really cool, but the typeface isn't scary enough. Have a look through DaFont's horror section.

Re: The Festival of Souls 2! Discussion Topic

Haha, good luck everyone.

Making a serious horror movie with LEGO; that's a true challenge and extremely difficult to do.

It's possible to make your brickfilm scary. Make it seem creepy, which is sort of a horror aspect I guess. You have to make your brickfilm actually instill fear in the viewers. I don't think jump scares every 5 seconds will cut it. mini/tongue

Not everyone can be Nosniborous, to be honest. But you can try. mini/tongue

Re: The Festival of Souls 2! Discussion Topic

To be honest, Frankenstein isn't that creepy unless you're really young. Yeah, it will certainly be a challenge to put fear in the viewer. Guys, when doing serious horror, avoid gore. Gore really doesn't help the film at all unless you're doing a cheesy b-movie. But keep blood to a minimum. It's pretty much a fact that the less gore, makes a more effective death.

Thanks, Hazzat! I was thinking that the typeface isn't "horror" enough - gonna have to do some changes with those horror fonts!
