Topic: Set Building: Basics

I'm somewhat new to brickfilms (I've always loved them, but I just started getting serious about them). I was wondering if I could get some help with set building. My sets always suck. How do I build a good set?

Re: Set Building: Basics

I recommend going to a lego store and spending 30$ on pick a brick, you can make good sets then.
Also you've probably heard this but only build what the camera can see.

Re: Set Building: Basics

Ok. Unfortunatly, I live in Pasco, so there are no Lego stores around.
I was also curious about what I can do for the actual set. Should I put something behind it?

Those are some tuts on building sets
Use bricklink to buy bricks for your sets. It is a much cheaper alternative.

Bricklink is cheaper than lego pick a brick.

Re: Set Building: Basics

I find that adding little details makes a big difference. Stuff like clocks, lamps, trashcans, chairs, benches, anything that would be in that location in real life makes your set look a little less like toys.

If you want to make yourself bankrupt sure thing, the best way is to work out a set on something like Blockland and then buy the bricks you need on Bricklink.

Re: Set Building: Basics

I would go to the lego store and do a pick a brick there if you're going to buy from lego at all because the pick a brick on there website is way more expensive and make sure when you pack the cup to connect the bricks together that way you can fit nore in there!

Re: Set Building: Basics

I found with bricklink that you can never buy BULK loads of bricks from the UK especially, they usually only have like 1-50 bricks D:

Re: Set Building: Basics

Yes, small details always help. I try to always add something a little humorous to each set. Something that you only see by chance out of the side of your eye. That's what I do when set building.

So yeah, I'm back from my mind.

Re: Set Building: Basics

When your building your sets, try to stay away from creating bright red or yellow walls and instead use soft colors such as tan or sand-blue so that whatever you are animating doesn't blend in with the walls.  Also, if you want get real fancy, try to shy away from building flat walls or floors for sets.  Adding a small flight of stairs to a Lego living room or a pillar against a wall gives the set more depth and realism.

I'll say, the online pick-a-brick store costs a FORTUNE.

Re: Set Building: Basics

You can get a steal in store, just stack and fill all the spaces with studs mini/wink.

Re: Set Building: Basics

Last time I went to get a pick a brick at the lego store, I ended up making a really long cut in the side of my cup because I stuffed it so full!

Re: Set Building: Basics

@BWJC   I meant that the online Lego pick a brick is expensive, the store version is better and you can get quite a good value if you stuff the Lego tight enough.

Re: Set Building: Basics

Yea...I understand. The online pick a brick is like 10 cents per 2x4 brick!

Ya LEGO is very expensive if you buy bricks from their store. I would recommend trying Bricklink or eBay, to find bricks cheaper.

I'm working on getting my studio back up and running, so stay posted...

Red and yellow are the only colors I have loads of...
