Another thing I'd suggest is designing things in LDD or on LDraw (whichever you prefer) before hand to get a rough idea on the layout of the set using pieces you know you have just to get a rough idea of layout, then build it in real life and add more minor details and things like that.

P.S. TO THE NUIMOBILE!!

Ya LEGO is very expensive if you buy bricks from their store. I would recommend trying Bricklink or eBay, to find bricks cheaper.

When your building your sets, try to stay away from creating bright red or yellow walls and instead use soft colors such as tan or sand-blue so that whatever you are animating doesn't blend in with the walls. Also, if you want get real fancy, try to shy away from building flat walls or floors for sets. Adding a small flight of stairs to a Lego living room or a pillar against a wall gives the set more depth and realism.

I'll say, the online pick-a-brick store costs a FORTUNE.

If you want to make yourself bankrupt sure thing, the best way is to work out a set on something like Blockland and then buy the bricks you need on Bricklink.
