Topic: Choosing a new webcam

Hello all,

After 7 years with our old logitech webcam I'm finally getting around to looking for an upgrade.  I've browsed the forums here some, and done some basic googling and I think I'm most interested in these two models:

Logitech HD Pro Webcam C910 (or 9000)
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/webcam-co … vices/6816

Creative Live! Cam Socialize HD 1080 Webcam 1080
http://us.store.creative.com/Creative-L … PHNRY0.htm

Can anyone here comment on either camera?  Not surprisingly, I'm most concerned about lens quality, how easily it can focus on very small close up objects, and how easily I can manipulate the focus.  Also the intangibles, how easily it fits into a LEGO set, how stable it is.  Basically all the marketing for webcams focuses on their capacity for video chats, which I have virtually no interest in and is entirely unrelated to suitability for brickfilming.  So any advice or comments from you all would be appreciated!

Re: Choosing a new webcam

C910 is an extremely good camera for its price. The quality is stellar, and it works with most programs like a charm.

Re: Choosing a new webcam

Get the C910. Logitech has always been the best for brick filming(i think) and you can depend on that webcam to have all of the manual controls you need. Plus, the res is FULL HD!

Re: Choosing a new webcam

It's funny, I have been wondering about the exact same thing before finally buying my C910. Didn't find any good infos on the Socialize HD, too, but I can assure you the C910 is a great camera! And I can be a real nit-picker with quality... you can't go wrong if you get it.

My Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000 is pretty bad.My Mom's been using it to make Skype calls and i think that's why it's bad.

The LQCP9k is also very nice. I use it. The quality is very good.

Re: Choosing a new webcam

Thanks for the comments everyone.  Your endorsement of a camera means a lot more than reading reviews on amazon.  I'll give the C910 a try.  With a little luck, I'll have some footage to show for it in a few months.

Re: Choosing a new webcam

As I'm sure you know, lighting is very important. My first couple days with my Quickcam were rather shaky, as I didn't light sets properly, resulting in grainy footage. If you get a couple halogen lights and light everything up nicely you can get amazing quality for such a low price.

Re: Choosing a new webcam

But with halogens, you sometimes get ugly lines across your frames. That's what happened to me when filming Climbing the Ladder. At the time, I didn't know what was going on, so I just left it alone, resulting in me getting a bad score.

Re: Choosing a new webcam

I have that line problem right now. I think frame averaging can fix it.

Not literally dead, just no longer interested in Lego or animation.

Re: Choosing a new webcam

That's if you use traditional light bulbs. Just use sunlamps instead, you'll be rid of those lines forever. (God, I sould like a skin cream commercial)
