Re: Is 2D Animation Dead?

Personally, I like 3D over any 2D stuff. I might make a few 2D things sometimes and they are sometimes fun to watch but they're getting a little old for me. 3D seems more cinematic and real when I watch it. Whereas a hand drawn or any 2D...you know it was drawn by someone and it's a little kid's thing.

Wrong.

Re: Is 2D Animation Dead?

Well I guess I can say that I like the computer 2D stuff than the cartoons drawn on paper.

Have you ever watched Looney Tunes, or Animaniacs, or The Simpsons, or Futurama? If you have, then I don't see how you can say that. If you haven't, then you are really missing out.

It's viewpoints like yours that allowed (shudder shudder) Hanna-Barbera to dominate animated television in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, and allowed Looney Tunes to disappear for almost 20 years.

Re: Is 2D Animation Dead?

Well, when your brickfilming, unless you shoot in 3D, you might still be using 3D figures (Minifigs) but it still turns out in your standard 2D format. What I am saying is in the video, the animation is not three-demensional. So, if 2D is dead, brickfilming is dead.

My point has been made.

Re: Is 2D Animation Dead?

That's like saying watching Toy Story in 2D makes it 2D animation. No, brickfilms are 3D animation because the minifigs are three-dimensional.

2D here (in this thread) meaning hand-drawn or Flash animation. 3D meaning CGI or stop-motion. And your point was incorrect. Brickfilming can be done in 3D; you just need two really small cameras.

Re: Is 2D Animation Dead?

I have yet to see a genuine 3D Brickfilm (although, it would be pretty interesting to see if it works with LEGO).

And I thought Stop Motion was an entirely different thing? I mean - its not replacing 2D. If anything, 3D is replacing stop motion...

One word: Spongebob.
Also, it's very popular in Japan and stuff with their anime, etc.
And that Princess Frog movie came out recently too.
I don't think 2D will be dead for a while.

Re: Is 2D Animation Dead?

The Lion King 3D was released yesterday. It earned $8,825,000 USD in ONE DAY.

(On a sad note, Winnie the Pooh made only a little over 33 million worldwide as of this post. Disney declared it a flop.)

Makes me wonder how Disney execs are going to react to this one.

Re: Is 2D Animation Dead?

Being in 3D and being The Lion King are two completely different things.
Also: with a budget of 30 mil., declaring Winnie-the-Pooh a flop is completely understandable, considering the reputation behind both Winnie-the-Pooh and Disney Animation.

Meh, yeah. I can kinda see it that way.
Re-releases don't always do so well at the box office though.

I was hoping that when Beauty and the Beast is re-released in 3D (and if it does well at the box office),
perhaps this will be a valid argument for the cause of 2D animation. And, Disney execs might give it a chance without abandoning it's original bread & butter.

Re: Is 2D Animation Dead?

I don't think 2d is dead at all. To me it can be much more personal than 3d - but maybe thats just me?

Also, like somebody already has pointed out, all the great japanese toons are in 2d and they look great!
