Topic: Deleting Accounts

I know that users do not have the access to delete their accounts, but if they asked a mod, would they be able to? I'm not saying that I want to, but does a mod have the ability to delete accounts? Thanks!

Re: Deleting Accounts

Mods don't, but I'm sure admins do. No admin will delete your account though, that would lead to a lot of missing posts in conversations.

Re: Deleting Accounts

I think if you want to "delete" an account, the admin could just perma-ban you. It has the same effect.

Re: Deleting Accounts

Yup, it is something we generally avoid doing as it can be perceived as rewriting history, allowing people to avoid the consequences of all the stupid posts they made, and it makes threads the deleted user started disappear.

Not really, permanent bans don't do anything to your post data.

Re: Deleting Accounts

What I am getting at is not deleting the data, but "terminating the account". Almost like a credit card, the history stays on, but the card is un-usable.

Re: Deleting Accounts

Yeah, in that case an admin could just change the password to random gibberish for ya.

The thing is that most of the time when I get requests like this, the person changes his mind the next week and feels sort of silly since it's totally reversible.

Thanks, (I'm not saying that I want this done though mini/tongue )

Re: Deleting Accounts

Well...
If you go to the User List I was stunned at how many banned people there are, most of which were spam bots who just posted an irrelevant advertisement and then did nothing. These accounts should probably be deleted.

Re: Deleting Accounts

They probably should be deleted, but who wants to sift through the list and individually ban them all?

Re: Deleting Accounts

^ This.  Perhaps if we ever get the forum upgraded in some manner that would prevent these accounts from being created frequently we could do something like that.  The amount of memory, etc. filled by these unneeded accounts is negligible, but I like the idea of having an accurate member count.

Re: Deleting Accounts

I can't remember: Do we have the thing where you sign up you have to type the distorted words into a box to prevent robots from getting in?

That might be a good idea.

Re: Deleting Accounts

On brickfilms.com you just had to type the word 'monkey' in a box. I don't know how effective it was but it sure was funny!

Re: Deleting Accounts

I think a test could be good. But it needs to be more original. People are now programming bots to read those distorted things. So you need a better test.

Mmm...
How about a picture of something, and you need to type the name of it into a box. mini/smile
Like a monkey. xD

But then you're alienating all the blind brickfilmers.

Well, they couldn't read the stuff on this site anyway. mini/tongue
No offense to any blind people.
