Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

Matt Smith is growing on me. I'm glad he's returning for another series, as his version of the Doctor seems like it wont become old for a while...

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

Yeah I feel the same. He's a brilliant Doctor that I feel is the best at being old and young at the same time.
He looks and feels more like an alien than Tennant ever did for me.

I like it when people disagree. Its really boring when people unanimously agree that something is awesome/bad.

I actually agree with nearly all of the RTD era ratings. But - you really need to see Human Nature/The Family of Blood. Its my favourite Doctor Who two-parter of all time (my favourite single episode being 'The Girl in the Fireplace'). It has an excellent plot (which was adapted from a 7th Doctor novel), and by far the best acting I have seen on Doctor Who. Plus, both 'Midnight' and 'Turn Left' are my favourites from Series 4.

We just got the series finale over in Australia. Oh. My. God.

I am gonna watch it in order and i'm on the one after 42 in Series 3 but i've heard alot about the 2 parter and Midnight so I will surely look them up pretty soon.

EDIT: oooh now I see that the 2 parter is next on my list anyways haha.

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

I watched my first episode of Doctor Who. I had no idea what was happening, I just knew he was in France with Vincent Van Gogh.

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

ah that's "Vincent and the Doctor" a great episode from Series 5.

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

When should I start watching Doctor Who? The first season?

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

I just saw another episode. It was called "A Good Man Goes to War"

That's not exactly the best place to start, if you want to get a feel for what its about then watch at least from series 5.

...
That's really not a good place to start...

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

Start from Episode 1 Series 1. Yeah, I know you have to watch 5 whole seasons in order - but that's really the only way you can understand 70% of what's going on.

Besides, its better than starting from the very first episode of Doctor Who ever - because that feat is almost physically impossible since they release DVD's of serials rather than seasons (which is so much harder to collect. I wish they would just release a box-set for each Doctor, even if it did cost a fortune...).

When I was in Wales we went into HMV, and they had huge box sets of Doctor Who's, including the 1970's ones. They may be in every HMV, probably are, I just don't ever go in there because of the prices they charge. I mean, Poltergeist was a good film, but £30?!
The Doctor Who box sets ranged from £20 - £50. They were 'revisited' episodes, so they were really old ones. They had the originals, right up to the modern ones.

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

wowowowowow no dude it's not good at all to start with that episode, gosh haha.
Allright I agree with Max on startin in series 1 but if you don't have time to watch all those episodes to keep on then why don't you atleast start with Series 5 and onwards but I can asure you that you will miss some amazing episodes.

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

Here are Episodes from Series 1-4 that you definitely must watch:

1.1: 'Rose' (Introduces us to the Doctor. Is a much better introduction than 5.1 since it introduces him from scratch)
1.5: 'Dalek' (Introduces us to both the Daleks and the Time War - which is ESSENTIAL information)
1.9/1.10: 'The Empty Child'/'The Doctor Dances' (Aside from 'Blink', its probably the scariest Doctor Who has ever gotten)
1.12/1.13: 'Bad Wolf'/'The Parting of the Ways' (An excellent series climax, plus it introduces the concept of regeneration and how the TARDIS works)

2.4: 'The Girl in the Fireplace' (my favourite episode of all time. I put it here just because its really, really, really good)
2.5/2.6: 'Rise of the Cybermen'/'The Age of Steel' (introduces us to the Cybermen. Plus - the Cyber Controller is hilarious)
2.12/2.13: 'Army of Ghosts'/'Doomsday' (a good climax, my favourite Doctor Who cliffhanger, and a hilarious monster mash)

3.8/3.9: 'Human Nature'/'The Family of Blood' (My favourite two-parter of all time. I put it here because it deviates from the typical Doctor Who episode and is excellent)
3.10: 'BLINK' (Introduces us to The Stone Angels - and it widely regarded as the greatest Doctor Who episode of all time. Its certainly the scariest...)

4.6: 'The Doctors Daughter' (proves that having a part-time lord offspring used as a weapon HAS BEEN DONE BEFORE)
4.9/4.10: 'Silence in the Library'/'Forest of the Dead' (It introduces us to River Song - so its vital you watch this)
'The End of Time': Part 1 and 2 (it shows Tennant regenerating into Matt Smith. Series 5 follows on directly afterwards from this, so its pretty useful)

Yeah, you can start with Series 5 and be able to follow most of the episodes - because Moffat pretty much went and changed everything (which I dont think was a bad idea - but it took a few episodes for me to adjust to it). Its certainly the cheapest option considering you can just buy one Box-set instead of shelling out for the Series 1-4 set. But if you want to know who the Daleks/Cybermen/Stone Angles are, why the TARDIS is able to become a woman, who River Song is, and how time and space is (supposed) to work within the series then it helps to have watched some of the RTD era.

Actually, I will just start from Series 1 because they have Doctor Who on Netflix.

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

One thing I absolutly love in Moffat eras Doctor Who is that they chose to focus on more new villains and don't REPEAT EVERY VILLIAN FOR EVERY SERIES!

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

The only villain from the RTD era that made an appearance in every series was the Daleks. Plus: we're only a series and a half into the Moffat era. For all we know, we could have a Stone Angels/Daleks/Silurian re-union in the second half (and I bet 'The Silence' will return somehow)...

Re: The Doctor Who Discussion thread(SPOILER ALERT!)

Well the new era don't reuse the Cybermen, The Master, The Sontarans over and over.

Instead they make new ones like The Silence, The Gangers, The Siren, The Vampires, Smilers, Prisoner Zero, Dreamlord, Madame Kovarion, The dude in The Lodger, The monster in Vincent and the Doctor and House, In one and a half series! How many new ones did the RTD era make in one and a half series!?

EDIT: Also Moffat said that the Daleks wouldn't be back for a long time
