Topic: Gun shot tutorial

I'm sorry for our recent streak of posting, but I would like to know if anyone has a good gun shot tutorial. Now, not "how to make a muzzle flash" or "how to make a bullet," but how to animate a gunshot. After looking at some videos of gunshots, we have a good idea, but we would like some ideas of how you would animate a gun shot.

Re: Gun shot tutorial

I've been considering making one of those...

anyway, when I animate the shot, I first have the minifigure point the gun at his target, then I move the gun up a respectable amount without easing in, in that frame, I also like to shine a light onto the guy to make the set look as if the flare which I'll add later is casting a glow on the set. For the next frame, I move the gun up further, with the light shining on the set, but have it be way further away to cast less light, then two or three frames of the movement easing out without the light.
It also helps to move the body back with the arm just a slight bit, and add a little bit of twisting of the minifigure to make the movement a little more realistic.
The lights also are useful for telling which frames you wished to edit in post production.

I could make a tut for you. mini/smile Will the gun be moving?

Re: Gun shot tutorial

Just wondering: why do you need a tutorial? Wouldn't it be better to try to figure it out on your own?

Re: Gun shot tutorial

Just make the gun take one giant step at once (recoil) and then easing out. Also, the body of the minifig should go backwards. But of course, it all depends on the calibre! mini/bigsmile

Do you want me to upload a test video for you?

Re: Gun shot tutorial

I believe that this method was used in ZachMG's The Profession.

1. Animate the minifig preparing to fire.
2. Remove the gun from the minifig's hand.
3. Turn the hand upside down.
4. Replace gun.
5. Animate two more frames of the gun arm moving up slowly, hand still upside down.
6. Remove the gun and flip the hand right side up.

The result will be a fast, natural looking recoil.

Re: Gun shot tutorial

That looks AWESOME, ZP!

Re: Gun shot tutorial

Nice, but you should have the guy jerk back after the gun fires.

Re: Gun shot tutorial

Looks pretty good!
The only thing I would do is to make the flash a little less constant.

I used stock footage for that one... Each frame of the flash changes slightly, It's firing pretty fast! mini/smile

Re: Gun shot tutorial

Yes, but I mean make it only show up on every other frame, or something like that.
I only noticed the changes towards the end of the animation.

Actually, ZP's is realistic. A real gun would only blow back a little. Most people think the arm should fly up and the body should move back, but that is an exaggeration. A realistic pistol recoil would look like someone bumped the end of the gun. Maybe more of an exaggeration for something like a rocket launcher.

Hope this is what you were thinking of.

I'm working on getting my studio back up and running, so stay posted...

You still need a little arm movement, but otherwise, yes, that is about what it should look like. The arm should move up a little, but you just had a flick of the muzzle. ZP's example is a practically perfect example of pistol recoil. Also, your muzzle-flare is way to small. I believe freddiew's second channel on Youtube has a great tutorial on muzzle-flares. It's geared towards AE, but the tips are helpful for any program.
