I used to not get Nic Cage. I saw him in Ghostrider and the National Treasure moives and I was like, 'Why is this man such a prevalent leading actor?' The more I see of him, though, the more I come to realize his self-absorbed genius. Here is a man who, even in a terrible film by terrible people, can effortlessly inject a manic hilarity into his scenes. And anyone who calls him a straight-up bad actor isn't a big moron. They are, in fact, the biggest. What, you thought he won that Oscar for being pretty? Pfffffft.

Recently I have been on a quest to see more Nic Cage movies. Sadly, they've been taken off Netflix now, but I saw a bunch which I consider to be some of the best movies I've seen in a while. The cream of this crop, of course, would be Leaving Las Vegas and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Both of which are dark and hilarious and depressing, they showcase N. Cage in top form. I was particularly struck by the schizophrenic brilliance of Bad Lieutenant, a movie in which Cage, brandishing the biggest handgun you've ever seen, charges about wildly, trying to browbeat the world around him while being the most hilariously corrupt cop imaginable. It's the kind of movie that shoots directly into one's Top Ten. If you want to be a film-maker and/or like good things, SEE THIS MOVIE. You will not regret it. Well, I mean, unless you're a terrible person who should die in a car fire.

TL;DR Post ITT about your fav Nic Cage lines/movies! If there are any obscure ones that rule, post those, too, because I'm still in search of more. I want to see Matchstick Men real bad, but ******* Netflix removed that ****. :-(

1. I never thought he was amazing, but I definitely don't think he sucks as an actor. He's good.

Re: Nicolas Cage - Great Actor of Our Times, Or Greatest?

The Bad Lieutenant was so awesome.

His soul is still dancing.

As for the poll, I should see more of him to be sure.

Re: Nicolas Cage - Great Actor of Our Times, Or Greatest?

Nicolas Cage is some kind of acting anomaly. When he wants to, he can turn in a really breathtaking, nuanced performance (Leaving Las Vegas, Adaptation, and Matchstick Men are proof of this), but he's also capable of going so far off the over-the-top deep end, but never once do we discredit him. Because of this, there are so many things that no other actor other than Nic Cage could ever hope to get away with without losing the audience's suspension of disbelief.

Watching this scene again, it occurred to me that Cage is the only actor I can think of who could pull off a scene threatening two old ladies at gunpoint and make it hilarious (I still crack up every time he says "You're f**ks! I hate you, I hate you both!"). Leave it to Werner Herzog to craft a film that seems tailor-made to fit all of Nic Cage's strengths as a performer.

His manic energy also has the ability to make otherwise unwatchable films watchable. Case in point, Deadfall.

2. Nic Cage is one of those people who cannot do wrong. Seriously: 'The Wicker Man' is one of the funniest bad movies I have ever seen in my life - and its all due to Nic Cage running around in a bear costume punching women. Without him, that movie would suck....but it doesn't, because it gave us "NO! NOT THE BEES!! NOT THE BEES!!! AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!" and "HOW DID IT GET BURNED!!!"

Adaptation and Raising Arizona are my favorite Cage movies. People who say Nicolas Cage is a bad actor haven't seen those films.

Vote: 1

For every (mostly recent) crap movie, Nic Cage has an awesome performance in an earlier film.

He was great in Raising Arizona (favorite performance and comedy), Kick-Ass (fun!), Matchstick Men, Face/Off, and Adaptation.

Crap: Bangkok Dangerous, Next, Ghost Rider

Nicolas Cage is a terrible and overrated actor. [/sarcasm]

I vote numero 1.), because I think that Nic Cage is a great actor (Raising Arizona was his best performance IMO), but not the best.

Re: Nicolas Cage - Great Actor of Our Times, Or Greatest?

Well, I think I might change my opinion, cause I actually haven't seen many movies with him. Though it does disturb me when people says he sucks.

Re: Nicolas Cage - Great Actor of Our Times, Or Greatest?

I hate him because I can.

Re: Nicolas Cage - Great Actor of Our Times, Or Greatest?

I really enjoyed WIld at Heart and The Bad Lieutenan.

And for the record Wild at Heart is on Netflix instant watch if your up for some David Lynch + Nicolas Cage awesomeness

Re: Nicolas Cage - Great Actor of Our Times, Or Greatest?

I'll admit, I haven't seen too many movies with him in it, mostly Disney films. So I might watch The Sorcerer's Apprentice again or something.

Just so we're all clear on this: If you haven't seen Raising Arizona you're missing out on something awesome.

Agree. Also, I remember Lord of War being pretty good, but it's been ages since I last saw that film.

Re: Nicolas Cage - Great Actor of Our Times, Or Greatest?

Lord of War is great.
I just bought Bad Lieutenant and Raising Arizona, also.
