I used to not get Nic Cage. I saw him in Ghostrider and the National Treasure moives and I was like, 'Why is this man such a prevalent leading actor?' The more I see of him, though, the more I come to realize his self-absorbed genius. Here is a man who, even in a terrible film by terrible people, can effortlessly inject a manic hilarity into his scenes. And anyone who calls him a straight-up bad actor isn't a big moron. They are, in fact, the biggest. What, you thought he won that Oscar for being pretty? Pfffffft.
Recently I have been on a quest to see more Nic Cage movies. Sadly, they've been taken off Netflix now, but I saw a bunch which I consider to be some of the best movies I've seen in a while. The cream of this crop, of course, would be Leaving Las Vegas and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Both of which are dark and hilarious and depressing, they showcase N. Cage in top form. I was particularly struck by the schizophrenic brilliance of Bad Lieutenant, a movie in which Cage, brandishing the biggest handgun you've ever seen, charges about wildly, trying to browbeat the world around him while being the most hilariously corrupt cop imaginable. It's the kind of movie that shoots directly into one's Top Ten. If you want to be a film-maker and/or like good things, SEE THIS MOVIE. You will not regret it. Well, I mean, unless you're a terrible person who should die in a car fire.
TL;DR Post ITT about your fav Nic Cage lines/movies! If there are any obscure ones that rule, post those, too, because I'm still in search of more. I want to see Matchstick Men real bad, but ******* Netflix removed that ****. :-(
